Game Two Box Score
The Saint Vincent softball team split a doubleheader at Geneva College, falling 3-0 in the opener before defeating the Golden Tornadoes 5-0 in the nightcap in Beaver Falls, PA.
In the first game of the day, the Golden Tornadoes got all three runs via two home runs, before Bearcat sophomore
Alyssa Grossman hurled her fourth complete game shutout of the season to give SVC the win in the nightcap.
The opener was a pitcher's duel from the start, as the two teams combined for just three baserunners over the first three innings. However, the Golden Tornadoes got all of their runs with one out in the third, with Martha Adams hitting a solo shot before Leanne Abate followed with a two-run blast.
The Bearcats were unable to mount an answer, tallying just two singles, one apiece from
Maria Adams and
Shannon Hite. Aside from the two homers, starter
Shauna Hetrick turned in a solid performance in the losing effort in the circle, scattering five hits and striking out three.
In the nightcap, the SVC bats were again silenced until the fourth, when
Leanna Seminsky led off by reaching on a three-base error. Two batters later, the Bearcat finally found the board, with Seminsky scoring on a perfect suicide squeeze bunt from Adams to take a 1-0 lead.
In the fifth, Saint Vincent quickly added onto its lead, with
Sam Shumaker leading off with a solo home run, her third of the year, to make the score 2-0. Three batters later, Seminsky belted an RBI double, sending home
Kerstin Makowski, who reached on a fielder's choice, to put the Bearcats in front 3-0.
The Bearcats closed out the scoring in the sixth.
Becky Deane hit a leadoff double, and was plated on an RBI single from Shumaker, before
Emily Lauterbach came through with a pinch hit single to plate Shumaker and put the day's final runs up on the board.
The run support was more than enough for Grossman, who went the distance and scattered three hits with two strikeouts. She was also the recipient of a number of fine defensive plays. With a runner on third and one out in the first, Adams made a diving grab of a pop up, and sprinted to the plate to tag out the Geneva runner who was attempting to score. In addition, a 1-6-3 twin killing would end the inning in the fourth, before Hite made a spectacular diving catch to quell a Geneva threat in the sixth.
After the split, the Bearcats' record moves to 13-9 on the year, and the team will now have the holiday weekend off, and will return to action on Tuesday with a Presidents' Athletic Conference doubleheader at Thiel College.
