The Saint Vincent softball team split its home finale doubleheader, defeating visiting Chatham 3-2 in the opener in nine innings, before watching the Cougars come back from an early deficit to win the nightcap 4-3.

In the opener, the Bearcats' Becky Deane tied the game with a solo home run with one out in the bottom of the seventh, before the freshman again came through with an RBI single in the home half of the ninth.  In the nightcap, the Bearcats led 3-0 in the fifth inning, only to see the Cougars score four unanswered runs over the final two frames to earn the comeback win.

Saint Vincent manufactured a run in the opener to find the board first.  Leanna Seminsky led off the first inning with a walk, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt from Shannon Hite, and after back-to-back walks, scored on a passed ball.

The Bearcats then looked to add onto their lead a number of times over the subsequent innings, but were unable to do so, stranding runners in scoring position in every inning between the second and sixth, including a pair of wasted bases loaded opportunities.

Starter Shauna Hetrick was able to allow the one-run lead to hold up, however, as she was strong from the start, allowing only a lead off single in the first before retiring 17 consecutive Chatham hitters through the sixth.  In the top of the sixth, the Cougars would find the board, using two doubles and a single to take a 2-1 lead.  Chatham was poised to add onto its lead in the seventh, putting runners on second and third with one out, but Hetrick pitched out of the jam to keep the SVC deficit at one run.

With one out in the bottom of the seventh, Deane blasted a shot over the left center fence to tie the game at 2-all.  The Bearcats stranded another runner at second in the eighth, before finally putting the game away in the second extra frame.  With one out, Maria Adams walked, and took second on a wild pitch.   Deane then followed with a single through the right side, scoring Adams from third and giving the Bearcats the walk-off win.

The Bearcats managed seven hits in the opener, led by Deane, who went a perfect 4-for-4, while also adding a walk.  Teammate Emily Petrowsky reached base three times, with two singles and a walk.  Hetrick went the distance to earn the complete game win, scattering six hits and striking out four without issuing a free pass.

In the nightcap, Saint Vincent, batting first as the road team, again took an early 1-0 lead in the opening frame, as Adams, who walked, scored on an Alyssa Grossman RBI single.  After stranding two runners on in both the second and third innings, the Bearcats added some insurance in the fourth, thanks to Deane once again, who belted a two-run double off the fence in center to give the Bearcats a 3-0 advantage.

In the bottom of the fourth, Chatham found the board, sending eight batters to the plate and scoring two runs on five hits to cut the gap to 3-2.  After stranding another runner in scoring position in the top of the fifth, the Bearcats saw the Cougars gain the lead in the bottom half with a pair of unearned runs.

In the top of the sixth, the Bearcats again put together a rally, with Petrowsky walking and Adams doubling with one out, but were unable to score the tying run.  SVC reliever Emily Lauterbach pitched out of a jam in the bottom of the sixth, stranding the bases loaded, but the Bearcats couldn't come up with any seventh inning magic, as Chatham held on for the one-run win.

Adams and Grossman led the Bearcat offense in the loss, each going 2-for-3.  Grossman started and took the loss in the circle, throwing 4 2/3 innings and allowing four runs (two earned) on seven hits, with one walk and three strikeouts.

After the split, the Bearcats are now 14-10 overall, and 4-8 in the Presidents' Athletic Conference.  The team returns to action on Sunday afternoon, traveling to Thiel College for another PAC doubleheader.
