A walk-off triple by Becky Deane in the bottom of the 7th inning broke a scoreless tie, lifting Saint Vincent to a 1-0 victory over Waynesburg University in game one of a conference doubleheader.  In game two, a Sam Shumaker single drove home the game's only run, as SVC again won, 1-0.

In the opener, SVC's Shauna Hetrick and Waynesburg's Amanda Baughman both dominated in the circle.  A leadoff single in the 4th inning by Saint Vincent's Shannon Hite was the first hit for either team, and a single by Baughman in the bottom of the 4th broke up Hetrick's no-hitter.

After six innings, the pitchers had yielded just two hits each.  In the top of the 7th, Hetrick again set the Yellow Jackets down in order, setting up an exciting finish.  With two outs, Emily Petrowsky singled to center, setting up Deane's game winner, which was hit to deep left field.

Hetrick tossed a 2-hitter, striking out five and giving up no walks.  Baughman took the hard-luck loss, striking out 10.

In game two, Alyssa Grossman (SVC) and Carrie Maier (WAY) took over where their teammates left off in the circle.  While SVC did manage a pair of hits in the first and another in the third, neither team was able to score.

Finally, in the top of the fifth - with Saint Vincent playing as the visiting team - Kerstin Makowski hit a leadoff double to right center field.  Lynn Buffoni then set down a perfect sacrifice bunt to move Makowski to third, and Sam Shumaker followed with a slap single to left to drive the run home.

The Jackets threatened to score in both the fifth and sixth innings, but the Bearcats kept them off the board.  In the 7th, Grossman set the side down in order to secure the 1-0 victory.   For the game, she scattered four hits and walked one.  Maier, who took the loss, went the distance as well, giving up seven hits, walking two and striking out three.

Saint Vincent is now 11-5 overall on the season, 2-4 in the Presidents' Athletic Conference.  Waynesburg falls to 9-7 (2-2).  SVC will be back in action on Saturday morning at 11AM at Bethany College in West Virginia.
