The Saint Vincent women's basketball team lost a big early lead, then stormed back to defeat Washington & Jefferson by a score of 72-59 at the Carey Center in conference play.
After the visitors opened the game with a three-pointer, Saint Vincent scored 12 straight points to take a 12-3 lead with 15:22 remaining in the first half.
The lead later grew to as high as 18 points (31-13) after a score by
Savannah Hardy with just over eight minutes remaining in the first half.
Down 33-17 with 5:30 left, the Presidents embarked on a 13-0 run over the next 3:42 to make the score 33-30 before a score by
Devin McGrath with 1:48 left ended the run. Up 35-33, SVC received a key three-pointer by
Kendra Burchfield that made it 38-33 before the team took a 38-34 lead into the break.
Five straight points by
Emily Fenton early in the second half helped run the lead back to ten for the Bearcats, 46-36, but the next eleven points came from W&J, as a layup by Ashley Kirkpatrick at the 12:40 mark made it a one-point game, 48-47. With 11:11 left, a steal and bucket by Vanessa Rivera gave the visitors the lead, 51-50.
Trailing by one, 53-52, the Bearcats' McGrath scored at the 9:30 mark to give the Bearcats the lead once again, and this time the team would never trail again.
A pair of threes by
Elle Collins made it a 10-point game, 66-56, with 3:05 left, and the team added free throws late in the game to pull away to a 13-point victory.
Brittany Sedlock led all scorers with 21 points and added 14 rebounds for Saint Vincent. McGrath (16), Collins (13) and Fenton (10) also scored in double figures. Saint Vincent dominated on the boards, holding a 48-30 rebounding advantage for the night.
W&J was led by Emily Abraham's 15 points.
Saint Vincent is now 10-3 overall, 5-1 in the Presidents' Athletic Conference. W&J drops to 7-6 (2-4).
The Bearcats will be back in action on Wednesday evening at Geneva College in Beaver Falls at 5:30PM.
