Bearcats unable to hold lead, fall to W&J

The Saint Vincent women's basketball team held a 10-point lead with six minutes remaining, but were unable to close the door, as Washington & Jefferson came back to win, 64-59, in Presidents' Athletic Conference action.

With the loss, the Bearcats drop to 4-3 overall and 2-1 in the PAC. W&J remains unbeaten in the conference at 3-0 and improves to 6-1 on the season.

In the first half, SVC went on an 8-0 run to take a 15-11 lead with 9:25 before the break. Sophomore Ally Schmidt scored the first four points and juniors Ariel Rocco and Taylor Mathers combined for the final four points.

After a 6-0 W&J run, SVC went on its own 6-0 run, led by four points by senior Devin McGrath. With W&J up two points and time winding down in the half, sophomore Jessica Welch hit a three-pointer to send SVC into the locker room up one, 29-28.

During the second half, SVC built its lead to as many as 13 points, including a 10-0 run that lasted three minutes and wound down to the mid-way point of the half. McGrath scored five points during the run and sophomore Jessica Hentrel added a three-pointer.

Over the final 9:51, the Presidents out-scored SVC, 27-9, with McGrath scoring eight of those points, as W&J earned the 64-59 win.

McGrath led Saint Vincent with 25 points, including 13-of-16 from the foul line, and 13 rebounds, eight steals and four assists. Senior Melissa Mansur and Hentrel each added eight points, with Schmidt chipping in seven points. Mansur also recorded five steals and five assists in the loss.

SVC returns to action on Saturday, Dec. 8, traveling to Grove City for a 1 p.m. tip-off in PAC action.
