The Saint Vincent women's basketball team cruised to a conference win over Geneva College at the Carey Center, defeating the Golden Tornadoes by a final score of 81-45. Five players scored in double figures for the Bearcats, who never trailed in the contest.
Emily Fenton converted a lay-up just ten seconds into the contest and Saint Vincent never looked back. After a bucket from
Brittany Sedlock, Chelsea Kauffman put Geneva on the board to make the score 4-2 with 17:26 remaining in the opening half. That was as close as the Golden Tornadoes would get the rest of the day.
A basket from Fenton just under a minute later started a 15-3 run for Saint Vincent over the next six minute. A
Melissa Mansur jumper with 10:58 remaining in the opening half capped the run, putting the hosts ahead 19-5. After Geneva's Rachel Rouan made the score 19-7, the Golden Tornadoes went without a field goal for the next seven minutes.
Saint Vincent then used stifling defense and took advantage of Geneva's inability to score to add to their lead. Fenton, Sedlock,
Devin McGrath and
Jessica Welch all scored for the Bearcats during a 14-0 run that built the Saint Vincent lead to 33-7 with 4:48 left in the first half.
A pair of free throws from Kauffman ended the scoreless drought for Geneva with 3:09 remaining.
Elle Collins then scored the final five points of the half for Saint Vincent and the Bearcats held a commanding 38-11 lead at the break.
Sedlock led all scorers with 11 points in the first half. Saint Vincent shot over 51% from the floor and forced 13 Geneva turnovers and held the Golden Tornadoes to just 25% shooting from the field.
Saint Vincent continued to build their lead in the second half.
Ariel Rocco and
Kendra Burchfield came off the bench to provide a strong scoring punch for the Bearcats. Rocco scored 10 points on five of six shooting while Burchfield added 11 points, including a pair of three pointers.
Kauffman scored 11 of her game-high 17 points in the second half and Beth DeLuca added 16 for Geneva but it was not enough to overcome the deficit. Saint Vincent grew their lead to as much as 38 points when
Alexa Lee connected on a pair of foul shots with 8:47 remaining in the game.
Rocco scored the final four points of the game for the Bearcats, including a jumper with :22 left to close out the game's scoring.
Rouan, 11 points, joined Kauffman and DeLuca in double figures for Geneva. McGrath led Saint Vincent with 14 points and Sedlock and Fenton contributed 13 and 12 points, respectively. McGrath, Sedlock and Rocco also pulled in six boards apiece to pace the Bearcats on the glass.
Saint Vincent shot 50% from the field in the game, as compared to only 26% shooting for Geneva.
With the win, the Bearcats improve to 19-4, 14-2 in the PAC. Geneva falls to 3-20, 2-14 in the PAC with the loss.
