The Saint Vincent women's basketball team closed out the regular season with a dominant performance, defeating Bethany College by a score of 103-50.
A quick three-pointer off of the opening tip by Renee Shepherd gave the Bison a 3-0 lead just ten seconds into play.
Emily Fenton and
Elle Collins followed with a pair of scores to put Saint Vincent ahead 4-3 90 seconds into play. Five straight points from
Brittany Sedlock grew the SVC edge to 8-3.
The back-and-forth trend continued as Bethany battled back to take a 15-12, again on Shepherd three-pointer, with 13:30 to play in the opening half. That was the last lead the Bison would hold, however, as the Bearcats dominated the rest of the half.
A pair of free throws from Fenton sparked a 14-3 run for the Bearcats over the next five minutes of play. A three-pointer from Anne Wilson got the Bison back to within five, 26-21, with under nine minutes to play but that was as close as Bethany would get the rest of the half.
The Bearcats outscored the Bison 25-5 over the final eight minutes of the first half to take a commanding 53-26 lead into the break.
Ariel Rocco hit a three as time expired to close out the first half's scoring. The 53 points was the most Saint Vincent scored in a half this season, surpassing their previous mark of 48 points against Grove City.
Sedlock poured in 18 points to lead all scorers in the first half and led all players with five rebounds. Fenton added 14 points and
Devin McGrath chipped in with nine to lead Saint Vincent offensively in the half. Shepherd led Bethany with 13 points and three boards. The Bison committed 21 turnovers in the first half as compared to only two for Saint Vincent.
The second half proved to be much of the same as Saint Vincent continued their offensive outpouring. The Bearcats outscored Bethany 50-24 and eclipsed the 100-point mark for the first time in nearly two seasons.
Alexa Lee's three-pointer with under a minute left put the Bearcats ahead 101-49.
Kelley Sedlock closed the games scoring, knocking down a pair of free throws to seal the 103-50 victory.
Fenton scored a game and career-high 24 points and Sedlock was right behind with 20 points and eight boards. McGrath (13),
Kendra Burchfield (12), and
Elle Collins (10) joined their teammates in double figures.
All in all, 10 of 11 Bearcats scored in the contest and forced Bethany to commit 30 turnovers. Saint Vincent limited the Bison to 35.4% shooting from the floor and 34.8% from three point range. Meanwhile, the Bearcats only turned the ball over six times and shot 45% from the field.
With the win, Saint Vincent finishes the season in second place in the PAC with a record of 15-3. The team will host Washington & Jefferson in the first round of the PAC playoffs on Tuesday, February 21 at 6pm in the Carey Center.
