Bearcats fall at Waynesburg, 74-66

WAYNESBURG, Pa. (Feb. 4) - Waynesburg out-scored Saint Vincent 23-7 over the final 8:34 of the game to pull away with a 74-66 win in Presidents' Athletic Conference action.

With the loss, the Bearcat women's basketball team falls to 17-4 on the season and 12-2 in the PAC, with both losses coming at the hands of the Yellow Jackets. Waynesburg improves to 16-5 overall and 11-3 in league action.

The hosts took a 6-2 lead three minutes into the game before SVC went on an 11-0 run that spanned four-plus minutes to open a 13-6 lead. During the run, senior forward Brittany Sedlock scored six points and the Bearcats collected six points on fastbreak layups. The run was snapped on a three pointer from Waynesburg's Jessi Drayer who entered the game tied with Sedlock for the league lead in points.

A layup by junior guard Melissa Mansur was followed by another trifecta by Drayer and an answer by senior guard Emily Fenton with 9:27 remaining in the first half, 18-12. After Waynesburg cut the score to 18-17 on three pointer from Elaine Hasek, Mansur scored six-straight points for the Bearcats around another Hasek triple to make it 24-20 with 4:24 left in the first half.

The Yellow Jackets then went on a quick, 5-0 run to take a four-point lead, 28-24 with 2:14 remaining in the half. A three pointer by freshman guard Elle Collins cut the lead to 28-27 with 2:02 in the half. A Waynesburg basket made it a three-point game again with 1:30 left before Sedlock scored the final four points of the half to send the Bearcats into the locker room with a one-point lead, 31-30.

In the second half, SVC trailed by six, 45-39 after a Hasek three-pointer with 14:30 to play before embarking on a 20-6 run covering six minutes. During the run, junior forward Devin McGrath scored nine points. With a traditional three-point play with 8:45 left to play, McGrath opened up the largest lead of the game for SVC, 59-51. However, Waynesburg closed the game on a 23-7 run to post the 74-66 final.

McGrath led Saint Vincent with 19 points and 11 rebounds, four steals, three assists and three steals. Sedlock added 18 points, six boards and three assists. Mansur was also in double-figures with 11 points and collected four assists. Fenton added nine points on three-of-four beyond-the-arc.

Waynesburg had four players in double figures, led by Hannah Hunter with a game-high 20 points. Hasek contributed 19 points and 10 rebounds while Drayer chipped in 14 points.

For the game, Waynesburg shot a staggering 62.5 percent (10-of-16) from three-point range and 43.3 percent (26-of-60) from the floor. The Yellow Jackets also out-rebounded SVC, 41-37.

SVC returns to action on Wednesday, Feb. 8, traveling to Washington, Pa., for an 8 p.m. PAC match-up against Washington & Jefferson.
