WASHINGTON, Pa. (Feb. 8) – Forwards
Devin McGrath and
Brittany Sedlock combined for 41 points and 26 rebounds as the Saint Vincent women's basketball team posted a 73-61 win at Washington & Jefferson in Presidents' Athletic Conference action.
With the win, the Bearcats improve to 18-4 on the season and 13-2 in league play. The Presidents drop to 10-12 this year and 5-10 in PAC action.
Senior guard
Emily Fenton started the game with a three pointer just 14 seconds in to give SVC the early lead, 3-0. After the Bearcats took a 10-7 lead on a three pointer by freshman guard
Elle Collins with 16:40 in the first half, W&J went on a 7-0 run to open up a 14-10 lead. SVC responded with a 9-0 run where all the points came from McGrath and Fenton.
With the ball game at one point, 22-21 following a W&J basket at the 8:41 mark, SVC went on a 6-0 run over the next minute-and-a-half, part of a 15-5 fleury to close out the half. SVC scored the final seven points of the period, including a three pointer by junior
Melissa Mansur with eight seconds remaining to take a 37-26 lead into halftime.
The Presidents came out strong in the second half, scoring 12 of the first 16 points to make it a three point game, 31-38 with 15 minutes. The Bearcats responded with an 11-0 run over the next three minutes to push the lead to 14 points, 42-38, with just under 11 minutes in regulation. During the run, freshman guard
Jessica Welch scored four points and then she responded after W&J ended the run with another three pointer.
W&J cut the lead to three points, 62-59, with 3:11 to play in the game before SVC finished the game on an 11-2 run to win, 73-61. SVC made eight free throws over that final stretch the seal the win.
McGrath led all scorers with 21 points to go with 13 rebounds while Sedlock added 20 points and 13 boards. Fenton finished with 12 points in the win while Welch chipped in eight points. Mansur registered a game-high five assists to go with seven points and four steals.
SVC returns to action on Saturday, Feb. 8, hosting Geneva at 4 p.m. in the Carey Center.
