Big first half leads SVC to win over Waynesburg

LATROBE (Mar. 21) - 10 different players scored at least one goal as the Bearcats improved to 3-1 on the season with a 21-7 win over Waynesburg on the SVC Turf.

The Saint Vincent women's lacrosse team got on the board just 31 seconds into play as junior Megan Fisher scored on a pass from classmate Hannah Hackman. Waynesburg evened the game just 10 seconds later when Maria Shepas posted her first goal of the game, 1-1.

The Yellow Jackets took the lead at the 24:12-mark on a goal by Toria Shepherd, 2-1. SVC then scored four-straight goals over a four-minute period to open up a 5-2 lead. Sophomore Kaley Burkardt scored the first two goals at the 22:27 and 19:15 marks before Hackman added a free-position goal at 18:35 and junior Nora Posival added a goal 15 seconds later.

Two straight Waynesburg goals made it a 5-4 game at the 15:23 mark before the Bearcats scored seven-consecutive times to open up a 12-4 edge. Freshman Molly Snyder got things under way with a free-position man-up goal at 12:27 before Fisher and Posival each scored two goals apiece in alternating fashion during a four-minute span. At the 6:07-mark, freshman Jessica Welch scored her first career goal on a free-position shot and Hackman capped off the run with her second goal of the game, assisted by junior Jess Drury, with 4:30 to play in the first half.

After a Yellow Jacket goal made the score 12-5, SVC closed out the first half with five-straight scores to take a 17-5 lead into halftime. Fisher scored on an assist by Posival at 3:51 before Hackman added a score at the 2:25-mark. Burkardt and sophomore Maggie Garvey then scored three goals combined in a 37 second span to close out the half.

SVC started the second half with a goal by senior Emma Leonard, her first of the season, after 4:31 elapsed in the period. At the 16:46-mark, freshman Natalie Ambrozic scored her second goal of the year to make it a 19-5 game. Garvey added her second tally on the day at the 14:07-mark of the second half before freshman Mary Wilcox capped off the Bearcat scoring with 13:16 to play with her second goal of the year.

Waynesburg added two goals during the final 12 minutes of play to make the final 21-7.

Burkardt led all players with six points (four goals, two assists) while Hackman added five points (three goals, two assists) and Fisher (four goals) and Posival (three goals, one assist) each tallied four points. Posival and Burkardt each led the team with six shots as the Bearcats out-shot Waynesburg, 34-29.

Leonard picked up a game-high six ground balls in the game while Welch collected four ground balls to help SVC hold a 36-20 edge in the category. Garvey finished an impressive 14-of-20 in faceoffs while Welch was three-of-six on draws.

Senior goalkeeper Jenn Forsyth picked up the win, playing 38:47 and making 10 saves. Freshman Michelle Mitchell played the final 21:13 in goal allowing two goals and making four saves in her first action of the season.

Erin Burry suffered the loss for Waynesburg after allowing five goals and making one save in 17:33 before being issued a red card.

The Bearcats return to action on Sunday, Mar. 25, hosting Oberlin (Ohio) at 1 p.m.
