Bearcats sweep Roaring Lions

LATROBE (Mar. 26) - Behind 23 hits and a perfect game by junior Emily Lauterbach, the Saint Vincent softball team earned a doubleheader sweep against Penn State-Fayette, winning the first game, 12-0, before posting an 8-0 win in the nightcap.

With the sweep, the Bearcats improve to 11-7 on the season and 7-1 at home. The Roaring Lions fall to 2-6 this season after winning their first two games of the year.

Lauterbach was excellent in the second game, tossing 6.0 innings (the game ended in the bottom of the sixth due to the eight-run rule). She struck out four to go along with her perfect game.

SVC started off the nightcap with two runs in the bottom of the first when sophomore Becky Deane hit an RBI single and later scored on an error. With two outs in the third inning, junior Maria Adams hit a single and stole second and then scored when freshman Shannon Baczek reached on an error, 3-0.

In the bottom of the fifth, the Bearcats added three more runs. Sophomore Lindsey Daniels started off the inning with a single and scored on a double by Adams. Adams came around to score on a single by Baczek, who scored on junior Sam Shumaker's RBI single through the right side.

SVC posted two runs in the bottom of the sixth to invoke the eight-run rule. Adams doubled to left center with two outs and pinch-runner Brianna Toth scored on an RBI single by Deane. After a single by Baczek advanced Deane to second, junior Alyssa Grossman doubled to left field to drive home Deane and end the game.

Adams finished game two 3-for-4 with two runs and an RBI while Baczek and Deane each went 2-for-4 at the plate. Deane drove in two runs and scored twice while Baczek had an RBI and run scored.

In the first game, SVC scored at least one run in each of their four half-innings. Daniels reached on an error to start the first inning and was sacrificed to second by Adams and scored on a Baczek single.

In the second, SVC added three more runs. Junior Lynn Buffoni led off with a single and then following two Bearcat outs, four-straight Bearcats reached base, highlighted by a two-run single by sophomore Ally Vrcek.

SVC collected four runs in the third inning, senior Emily Petrowsky and Buffoni both walked to start the frame and Petrowsky scored on a single by freshman Suzie Cool. Adams hit an RBI fielder's choice and Deane hit a two-run single to make it an 8-0 game.

The Bearcats used five pinch-hitters in the bottom of the fourth and four reached base safely. Freshman Mikele Prokopovich walked to start the inning and junior Shauna Hetrick singled to center. Lauterbach then singled to load the bases and Prokopovich came in to score from third on a wild pitch. After sophomore Megan Regula walked, Hetrick scored on a wild pitch and Lauterbach scored on an RBI single by sophomore Olivia Dongilla. Baczek ended the scoring with an RBI double down the right-field line.

Deane finished game two 2-for-3 with a walk and three RBI while Baczek went 2-for-3 with a double, a walk and two RBI. Vrcek finished 2-for-4 with two RBI and also pitched the final inning, striking out the side in order.

Grossman earned her team-leading fourth win in the first game, tossing 4.0 innings and allowing just two hits. She walked three on the day and struck out one.

The Bearcats open up Presidents' Athletic Conference action on Saturday, Mar. 31, traveling to Pittsburgh, Pa., for a 1 p.m. doubleheader against Chatham.
