PITTSBURGH, Pa. (Mar. 31) - Behind a grand slam by junior Sam Shumaker and a three-run homer by senior Emily Petrowsky, the Saint Vincent softball team earned a 9-0 win in the first game before winning the nightcap, 5-3, at Chatham to open Presidents' Athletic Conference action.

With the sweep, the Bearcats improve to 13-7 on the season and 2-0 to begin PAC play. Chatham drops to 8-10 overall and 0-2 in the early stages of conference action.

In game one, SVC took a 1-0 lead into the third inning before Shumaker belted her first grand slam of the year. Junior Shannon Hite led off the inning with a walk and advanced to second on a bunt single by classmate Maria Adams. Following a single by freshman Shannon Baczek loaded the bases, Shumaker knocked in all four Bearcat runs of the third inning.

In the top of the fourth, SVC added another run on an RBI single by Adams that drove home freshman Suzie Cool. Following back-to-back walks to Shumaker and sophomore Lindsey Daniels, Petrowksy launched her second homer of the year, a three-run shot.

Junior Emily Lauterbach earned the win to improve to 3-1 on the season after tossing the complete-game one-hitter. In 31.0 innings this year, Lauterbach has yet to allow an earned run.

Shumaker finished game one 1-for-2 with a home run and four RBI while Petrowsky went 1-for-3 with a home run and three RBI. Adams (3-for-4) and Baczek (2-for-3) each registered multi-hit performances in the first game.

Sophomore Ally Vrcek earned the win in game two, tossing 7.0 innings in relief of junior starter Alyssa Grossman. Vrcek came on after the first batter of the game and allowed two runs (both unearned) while striking out 15 and walking two.

Chatham picked up two runs in the first inning before the Bearcats got a run back in the bottom-half of the inning on an RBI fielder's choice by Baczek, 2-1.

SVC picked up another run in the fourth to tie the score, 2-2, when sophomore Megan Regula scored on a passed ball. In the fifth, SVC tallied three runs to take the lead as Vrcek helped herself with an RBI single and Shumaker delivered a two-out, two-run double.

The Bearcats return to action on Tuesday, Apr. 3, hosting Geneva in a PAC doubleheader at 3:30 p.m.
