LATROBE (Apr. 14) - The Bearcats rallied with three runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to post a walk-off, 4-3, win before dropping the nightcap, 8-7, against Washington & Jefferson in Presidents' Athletic Conference doubleheader action.

With the split, the Saint Vincent softball team moves to 18-12 on the season and 7-3 in the league standings. The Presidents now sit at 12-14 overall and 6-4 in PAC play.

In the first game, SVC trailed nearly the whole way after W&J scored two runs in the top of the third inning and added another in the top of the fifth.

The Bearcats answered back with a run in the bottom of the fifth inning on an RBI single by sophomore Becky Deane to make it a 3-1 game after five innings.

Freshman Suzie Cool and sophomore Lindsey Daniels led off the top of the seventh inning with back-to-back singles before junior Maria Adams registered a two-run double to right center to tie the game. After a W&J pitching change, Deane reached on a fielding error by the shortstop which allowed Adams to score from second base for the walk-off win.

Junior Emily Lauterbach earned the win for the Bearcats, going the distance and scattering six hits and three runs (all earned). She walked one and struck out two en route to her team-leading seventh win of the season.

The nightcap started the same way as SVC quickly scored five runs in the top of the first inning. Daniels led off the game with a single to right and was sacrificed to second on a bunt by Adams. Deane followed with a single to left and freshman Shannon Baczek recorded an infield single to drive home the game's first run. An RBI single by junior Sam Shumaker brought home the second run and junior Alyssa Grossman belted a two-run triple to right center to stretch the lead to 4-0. Grossman came home to score on a single by Cool for the final run of the inning.

The Presidents responded with a run in the bottom of the first and two runs in the bottom of the third inning to cut the lead to 5-3. In the top of the fifth, SVC added two more runs on consecutive RBI singles by Deane and Baczek, 7-3.

After W&J added a run in the bottom of the fifth, the Presidents tallied four runs in the bottom of the sixth, including a controversial infield single where Baczek collided with a runner while trying to field a pop-up between first and second.

Lauterbach suffered the loss in relief of Grossman, working 0.1 innings and allowing two runs (both earned) on one hit and two walks. Grossman worked the first 5.1 innings and yielded six hits and six runs (three earned).

The Bearcats return to action on Thursday, Apr. 19, hosting Bethany in a PAC doubleheader at 3:30 p.m.
