LATROBE (Apr. 19) - Junior Alyssa Grossman registered a two-run, go-ahead homer in extra innings to put the Bearcats ahead, 3-1, en route to a 3-2 win over Bethany after dropping the first game of the doubleheader, 8-1, in Presidents' Athletic Conference action.

With the split, the Saint Vincent softball team is now 19-13 this season with an 8-4 mark in conference play. The Bearcats are now tied for second place in the conference with Thomas More, who SVC plays this weekend in Crestview Hills, Ky. Bethany, after being picked as the preseason favorite in the PAC, moves to 7-22 this year and 4-8 in league action.

After seven innings wasn't enough to settle the second game, the two teams headed to the eighth inning. Junior Sam Shumaker led off with a single down the left-field line. Grossman followed up with her first homer of the season to left field to put the Bearcats ahead, 3-1.

In the bottom of the eighth, Bethany picked up a run on an RBI ground out with the bases loaded, but sophomore Ally Vrcek was able to get out of the jam and hold on for the 3-2 win.

Vrcek went the distance in game two, tossing 8.0 innings and scattering seven hits while allowing two earned runs and striking out 11.

Grossman and sophomore Lindsey Daniels each finished 3-for-4 in the nightcap, with Grossman posting a double, two RBI and a run scored in the win. Daniels drove in the Bearcats other run on a single up the middle in the sixth inning.

The Bison picked up the win in the first game by scoring two runs in the second inning and three runs in each of the fifth and sixth innings. SVC's lone run in the first game came on an RBI fielder's choice by Vrcek in the bottom of the third.

Sophomore Becky Deane and freshman Shannon Baczek each posted multi-hit games as Deane finished 2-for-3 and Baczek went 2-for-4 with a double.

Junior Emily Lauterbach suffered the loss, allowing eight runs (five earned) and yielding nine hits in 6.0 innings. Freshman Mikele Prokopovich pitched the final 1.0 inning without allowing a baserunner.

The Bearcats return to action on Saturday, Apr. 21, traveling to Crestview Hills, Ky., for a 12 p.m. doubleheader with Thomas More. Both teams enter the weekend in a tie for second place with identical 8-4 conference records.
