LATROBE (Apr. 24) - After trailing by just one goal at halftime, the Saint Vincent women's lacrosse team fell to visiting Washington & Jefferson, 16-9, in the regular season home finale of the 2012 campaign.
With the loss, the Bearcats slip to 5-6 on the season while the Presidents boost their mark to 10-3.
W&J got on the board first at the 26:35-mark, but sophomore
Kaley Burkardt answered back just under four minutes later to tie the game, 1-1. After two-straight W&J goals, SVC responded with a pair of tallies under a minute apart. Freshman
Molly Snyder made it a 3-2 game on an assist by junior
Alyssa Lang with 15:04 to play in the first half, before Burkardt converted a free position shot at 14:21 to the the game once again.
A Presidents goal at 12:36 was answered 35 seconds later by junior
Megan Fisher who took a pass from Lang and found the back of the net, 4-4. W&J scored the next two goals, but Lang made it a 6-5 game with 6:48 before the break on an assist from classmate
Nora Posival. Lang recorded her third assist of the half when she found sophomore
Maggie Garvey with 1:28 to play in the period to send the two teams into halftime with W&J leading, 7-6.
W&J scored five-straight goals in the first 15 minutes of the second half to open up a 12-6 lead, but SVC responded with three-consecutive goals in a 2:23 span. Lang tallied the first on an assist by Posival and junior
Hannah Hackman scored a pair of goals just 22 seconds apart to cut the gap to 12-9. W&J ended the game on a 4-0 run to leave Latrobe with the 16-9 victory.
For the game, W&J out-shot SVC, 33-19, while the Bearcats recorded four more ground balls, 16-12.
Lang finished with a game-high five points on the day while Burkardt, Hackman and Posival each added two points.
Senior
Jenn Forsyth suffered the loss in goal, making 11 saves in 60 minutes of action.
SVC closes out the 2012 season with a pair of road games this weekend, first at the College of Wooster (Ohio) on Saturday, Apr. 28 at 11 a.m., and then at Ohio Wesleyan on Sunday, Apr. 29, at 1 p.m.
