LATROBE (Sept. 11) - Sophomore
Brody Ruffner set the single-game school record with six goals as the Bearcats routed Penn State-New Kensington, 14-0, in non-conference action on the SVC Turf.
With the win, the Saint Vincent men's soccer team improves to 4-2 on the season, while Penn State-New Kensington drops even at 1-1.
The 14 goals SVC scored also broke the team record which was 11 goals, which previously happened three times and was most recently achieved on Oct. 31, 2001 against Wilberforce (Ohio).
Ruffner, who now leads the Presidents' Athletic Conference with seven goals on the season, opened the scoring after 7:59 had elapsed when junior
Trevor Cutlip found him for the first score, 1-0. Ruffner added his second goal of the game nearly four minutes later on a sliding goal with assists credited to senior
Gage Arnold and sophomore
Josue Cuadra.
Cuadra added the Bearcats' third goal at the 22:50-mark when he took a pass from freshman
Christian Trueax for his third goal of the season, as SVC took the 3-0 lead into halftime.
The Bearcats added to the lead 3:10 into the second half when Cuadra controlled a deflection in the box and passed to Ruffner for his third goal of the game. Eight minutes later, Ruffner added his fourth tally on a sliding goal in the lower right corner off a cross from Cutlip, 5-0.
SVC extended the lead to 6-0 when Cuadra took control of a Lions' touch and registered the unassisted tally at the 59:29-mark.
Just 32 seconds later Cutlip posted his first goal of the season low in the box after a cross by sophomore
Connor Rohrback and header by Cuadra, 7-0.
At the 63:17-mark junior
Elom Pedanou registered his third goal of the season after he corralled a shot off the post. Sophomore
Christopher Vaughan also got in on the scoring three minutes later when freshman
Constantine Barlamas hit a cross that Pedanou headed to Vaughan, 9-0.
Ruffner then tied the school record with his fifth goal of the game on a breakaway at the 77:23-mark.
Junior
Aaron Wilkinson posted his second score of the season on a header off a corner by Ruffner at the 82:38-mark to extend the lead to 11-0. Ruffner set the school record with his sixth goal of the game just over two minutes later when he went lower corner off a cross by Vaughan.
Pedanou added his second goal of the game at the 87:51-mark on a breakaway to extend the lead to 13-0 before Trueax posted the final score with one minute remaining for his first career goal.
Ruffner led all players with nine shots (seven on goal) while scoring six goals and adding an assist. The previous school record of five goals was set in 1981 when Tayfun Testepe scored five times against Pitt-Johnstown and was also achieved in 2004 by Rick Seigh against Shawnee State (Ohio).
Cuadra and Pedanou each posted two-goal games while a total of 10 players recorded at least a point.
For the game, SVC out-shot Penn State-New Kensington, 38-1, behind a balance of 19 shots per half. The Bearcats also held a dominant advantage on corner kicks, 10-1.
