LATROBE (Sept. 25) - The Bearcats took Hiram (Ohio) to the brink before falling, 2-1, in the final non-conference match before league play begins on the SVC Turf.
Following the defeat, the Saint Vincent men's soccer team ends the exhibition portion of the schedule with a 5-4-1 record heading into Presidents' Athletic Conference play, which begins Saturday. Hiram, who entered the game ranked fourth in the National Soccer Coaches Association of America Great Lakes region and was just outside of the national Top 25 poll, improves to 9-0 this year.
The two teams played a scoreless first half with the Terriers holding a 9-4 advantage on shots before the guests posted the game's first goal 9:07 into the second half on a header off of a corner kick.
Hiram extended its lead to 2-0 with a goal at the 66:46-mark before sophomore
Josue Cuadra cut the deficit to 2-1 with his fifth goal of the season in the 82nd minute with assists going to junior
Luke D'Amico and sophomore
Brody Ruffner.
For the game, the guests out-shot SVC, 32-7, and held a 9-2 edge on corner kicks. Junior
Elom Pedanou and D'Amico led the team with two shots a piece.
Senior goalkeeper
Clemente Mejia suffered the loss and make six saves while allowing both goals in 90 minutes. The Bearcats also recorded two team saves in the defeat.
Saint Vincent opens up PAC play on Saturday, Sept. 29, hosting Westminster at 3:30 p.m. on the SVC Turf.
