LATROBE (Sept. 29) - The Bearcats allowed two goals within 2:47 in the first half and were unable to recover as they dropped their Presidents' Athletic Conference opener to Westminster, 3-1.
With the loss, the Saint Vincent men's soccer team moves to 5-5-1 on the season with an 0-1 mark in league play. Westminster improves to 7-2-1 and 1-0 in the PAC.
The Titans scored their first goal at the 22:32-mark when Stephen McDaniel scored in the lower corner on a through ball by teammate Ethan McCarthy. They then struck just 2:47 later when Austin Ewers found the back of an empty net after SVC senior keeper
Clemente Mejia came out to challenge the ball, 2-0.
Just 4:29 into the second half, the Bearcats made it a 2-1 game when sophomore
Josue Cuadra danced through the Westminster defense and scored his sixth goal of the season just inside the near post from around six yards out.
Westminster added an insurance goal in the 77th minute on a score by David Osae.
For the game, the Titans out-shot the Bearcats, 20-14, with SVC holding a 12-8 edge on shots in the second half. Cuadra led the team with four shots while juniors
Luke D'Amico and
Aaron Wilkinson and sophomore
Brody Ruffner each recorded a pair of shots.
Mejia suffered the loss in goal, making five saves in 90 minutes.
SVC returns to action on Wednesday, Oct. 3 when they travel to Beaver Falls for a 7:30 p.m. match-up with Geneva.
