LATROBE (Sept. 7) - Behind three second-half goals, the Saint Vincent men's soccer team broke a 1-1 halftime tie to down Pitt-Bradford, 4-1, in the 2012 home opener at the SVC Turf.
With the win, the Bearcats even their record at 2-2 on the season, while Pitt-Bradford drops to 1-3 to begin the year.
Pitt-Bradford scored the game's first goal on their first shot of the game, which came at the 20:21-mark of the first half. Colton Bly took a pass from teammate Tyler Hinojosa to beat SVC keeper
Clemente Mejia.
The Bearcats tied the game just under six minutes later when senior
Gage Arnold was pulled down in the box and converted the penalty kick for his first goal of the season, 1-1, which was the score at halftime.
At the 67:25-mark, sophomore
Josue Cuadra took a pass on the left side of the box from classmate
Brody Ruffner and snuck it past the Bradford keeper.
Ruffner extended the lead 1:44 later when he converted a penalty kick of his own for his first goal of the year. Junior
Elom Pedanou added an insurance goal at the 77:14-mark when he found a rebound of a shot by classmate
Trevor Cutlip and converted his second goal on the season.
For the game, the Bearcats held a dominating 36-8 advantage on shots, including 18-4 on goal. Pitt-Bradford attempted two corner kicks to SVC's one.
Ruffner led SVC with eight shots (three on goal), while Cuadra had six shots (four on goal) and Arnold added five shots (four on goal).
Mejia made three saves in goal, playing the entire 90 minutes, to earn the win and improve his record to 2-2.
The Bearcats continue non-conference action on Sunday, Sept. 9 at home against Franciscan at 3:30 p.m.
