After erasing a 15-point deficit with five minutes remaining, the Bearcats lost to Penn State-Beaver by a score of 85-83 after the Lions hit a pair of free throws with 7 seconds remaining to secure the win.
Isaac Turner scored with 25 seconds remaining in the game to close the gap to two, 83-81, then the Bearcat defense forced a turnover with 20 ticks left.Â
Sean Kett then scored in the paint to tie the game, 83-83.
Beaver's Nick Miller, who led all scorers with 31 points, drove downcourt and lost control of the ball after dribbling off his foot. He recovered, gained possession of the ball, and drew a foul, going to the line with 7.6 seconds remaining, and hit both shots. Saint Vincent was unable to get a shot to fall in the final seconds.
Dillon Stith, who got in foul trouble early and was held scoreless in the first half, tallied 24 second half points, shooting 7-for-10 from the floor, including two crucial dunks that helped to rally the Bearcats, and 10-12 from the free throw line.
Isaac Turner had 20 points, while
Sean Kett had a double-double, posting 14 points and 13 rebounds.Â
JC Howard added 13 points, while
Pat Jones, making his first start as a Bearcat, had 7 points. Defensively, Howard had four steals.
Beaver, which led by six (45-39) at the half, out-rebounded SVC by a 42-32 margin on the day.
The Bearcats took a 56-55 lead after a score by Howard with 12:54 left in the second half, but the fast-paced game played by the Lions allowed them to take control of the game, scoring 10 consecutive points. They eventually built the lead to 78-65 before Stith started a Bearcat comeback with a dunk. He capped a string of 9 straight points with his second dunk, this one with 3:46 left, making the score 79-72.Â
Turner then cut the gap to five, 79-74 with 3:06 remaining.
Down 83-76, Saint Vincent then scored the game's next 7 points, to tie the game at 83, but Miller's free throws were enough for the Lions to win the game.
Saint Vincent (0-1) will conclude the weekend against La Roche College on Saturday night at 8PM.Â
