Taylor Mathers set a school record for blocked shots, along with a career high in rebounds as the Saint Vincent women's basketball team defeated Westminster College on the road in New Wilmington in Presidents' Athletic Conference play.
Â
Elle Collins also set a new career high in points (26) as SVC won by a final score of 82-70.
Â
Both teams struggled early in the game, combining to hit just one of their first 10 shots. Mathers broke the scoreless tie at the 18:20 mark, then scored again 30 seconds later to give the visiting Bearcats a 4-0 edge.
Â
Near the 14 minute mark,
Elle Collins hit the first of what would turn out to be four three-pointers in the first half, making the score 13-6. The lead ran as high as eight points (16-8) after another Collins trey at the 13:10 mark, but the hosts later went on an 8-2 run that made the score 21-19.
Â
Jill Kegg then ended the Westminster run with a three-pointer for the Bearcats to extend the lead back to five.
Â
Late in the first half, Collins hit another three that once again ran the lead to eight, 36-28, but the final six points of the half belonged to the Titans, cutting the margin to just two, 36-34, at the break.
Â
Early in the second half,
Jasmine Weems hit a pair of threes to help rebuild the lead to six, 44-38, while Mathers took control of the paint, blocking shots and grabbing several rebounds.
Â
With 14:50 to go,
Mara Benvenuti hit from outside the arc to run the lead to nine, 51-42, then Mathers followed with a bucket to extend the lead to eleven, 53-42.
Â
After the hosts later trimmed the margin back to eight (63-55) following a Courtney Zitt three-point play, Collins scored five straight points to run the lead to thirteen, 68-55, with less than 8 minutes remaining.
Â
With just over three minutes left, Mathers tallied her 8th blocked shot of the game, erasing the mark set by Caryn Glassbrenner in 2007.  She later added a 9th block to add to the new record.
Â
The Bearcats continued to play well on both sides of the ball through the closing minutes to seal the win.
Â
Collins' 26 points led all scorers, while Mathers added 20 points and 16 rebounds, missing a rare triple-double by two blocks. Weems contributed 13 points and 8 rebounds. Collins also had 6 assists on the day.
SVC is now 2-0 in the PAC, 4-2 overall. After final exams this week have been concluded, the team returns to action on Monday, December 16, hosting Washington & Jefferson College at 4:30PM in the Carey Center. Â
