Second half propels SVC to win at Geneva, 79-42

BEAVER FALLS, Pa. (Feb. 6) - The Saint Vincent women's basketball team out-scored Geneva 46-18 in the second half en route to a 79-42 win on the road in Presidents' Athletic Conference action.

With the win, the Bearcats improve to 17-5 on the season and 13-2 in the conference, and can clinch at least second place in the league with a one more win or a W&J loss. Geneva drops to 1-14 in the PAC and 3-20 overall.

SVC started the game on a 13-0 run that lasted over five minutes. Senior forward Devin McGrath and sophomore guard Ally Schmidt each scored four points during the run. After a Golden Tornadoes' basket ended the spurt, SVC used a 6-1 run that included four points by junior forward Taylor Mathers, 19-3.

Junior forward Ariel Rocco scored back-to-back SVC baskets, sandwiching a Geneva three-point play to push the margin to 23-8 with 9:17 remaining in th period. Geneva out-scored SVC, 16-10, over the final 8:18 as sophomore guard Elle Collins posted a pair of trifectas to help SVC take a 33-24 lead into the locker room.

The Bearcats started the second half on a 24-2 run, including 19-0, that included four three-pointers by four different players. A layup by Mathers with 10:40 to play put SVC ahead, 57-26.

Four points from McGrath put SVC ahead by 31 points, 63-32, with 5:27 to go, before a traditional three-point play by Geneva cut the margin to 28. Back-to-back three-pointers by freshman Jillian Kegg stretched the lead to 69-35. Saint Vincent capped off the scoring with a three-pointer by sophomore guard Emily Satkovich with under 10 seconds in the game.

For the contest, the Bearcats shot 41.3 percent (31-of-75) from the field on the day and 42.3 percent (11-of-26) while holding the Golden Tornadoes to just 24.5 percent (12-of-49) from the floor. SVC also held a substantial 51-34 edge on rebounds and recorded 16 steals on 24 Geneva turnovers.

In total, 12 Bearcats scored as Mathers led all players with 12 points, while McGrath added 10 points and 16 rebounds. Kegg posted a season-high 10 points on the day in just 13 minutes. Collins added nine points on three triples, bringing her total to 19 in the last four games.

SVC returns to the court on Saturday, Feb. 9, traveling to Bethany for a 2 p.m. match-up with the Bison in the regular season road finale. In addition to 1480-AM WCNS, the Bearcats will be featured on the PAC Sports Network as the Game of the Week, which can be viewed at www.pacstream.net.
