LATROBE (March 12) - The Bearcats held a 9-4 lead at halftime, but Thiel rallied to force overtime, eventually winning by a score of 15-14 on the Saint Vincent Turf.
With the loss, the Saint Vincent women's lacrosse team falls to 2-1 on the season, while Thiel improves to 2-5.
Thiel scored the game-winning goal with 41 seconds left in the first of two three-minute overtime periods. The two teams were scoreless in the second three-minute period, however, Saint Vincent's
Nora Posival had what appeared to be the game-tying goal called off with 2:07 remaining, and was issued a yellow card for a dangerous play after a Thiel player fell down.
The Bearcats had taken a 9-4 lead into halftime thanks to two goals apiece from
Megan Fisher,
Molly Snyder and
Alyssa Lang.
Thiel roared back in the second half, out-scoring SVC, 10-5, in the 30 minutes of play. A goal by Lang with 15:31 remaining in the second half put SVC ahead, 12-8, but Thiel scored the next three goals to cut the margin to one goal, 12-11.
A score from Snyder (assisted by Posival) pushed SVC back ahead by two goals, 13-11, but Thiel would tie the game just under 3:30 later.
Kaley Burkardt put SVC back in front, 14-13, with 5:39 left in regulation, but Thiel's Beth Snider knotted the game at 14-14, with 4:11 to play and forced overtime.
For the game, SVC held a one-shot advantage, 27-26, over Thiel, while recording 34 ground balls to the Tomcats' 28.
Lang and Snyder lead the team with five points and four goals each. Posival added three points (one goal, two assists) and Burkardt (two goals) and
Hannah Hackman (two assists) each registered two points.
Thiel's Cassy Mahdi led all players with eight points (all goals), while Snider added five points on four goals.
Michelle Mitchell suffered the overtime loss, playing all 66 minutes and making eight saves. Thiel's Asia Wallace also went the distance to earn the win, posting 11 saves.
The Bearcats return to action on Thursday, March 14, hosting Allegheny at 4 p.m. on the turf.
