LATROBE (March 20) - The Saint Vincent men's lacrosse scored four goals in the second quarter to tie the game, 5-5, at halftime, but Wooster scored four goals in the third quarter to take control as SVC fell, 12-9, on the turf.
The loss drops the Bearcats to 2-3 on the season, while the Fighting Scots improve to 3-2 this season.
After SVC's
Jeremy McGuire scored the game's first goal just 3:53 into the first quarter, the Fighting Scots scored four-straight goals to close out the period, including one as the clock hit 0:00.
Wooster increased the lead to 5-1 2:04 into the second quarter, before SVC went on a 4-0 run to tie the game at the half.
Jay Lunz scored unassisted at the 10:43 mark and then
Matt Mackey scored off a pass from
Nick Pensyl at 8:11, 5-3.
Anthony Altieri got the Bearcats within a goal at the 3:20-mark, before assisting on the game-tying goal by Pensyl with 11 seconds left in the first half.
The Fighting Scots started the second half strong, however, scoring four goals over the first 12 minutes of the second half to open up a 9-5 lead.
Bryce Pasquariello took a pass from
Matt Mackey with under a minute left in the third quarter to cut the margin to 9-6, entering the final 15 minutes.
The Bearcats and Scots traded goals early in the final period, with Pasquariello assisting on Pensyl's goal at 10:35, before Wooster pushed its lead to five goals, 12-7, with a pair of scores. Lunz closed the scoring with two goals (the first assisted by
Alex Walsh), as SVC fell, 12-9.
Lunz led SVC with 10 shots, while
Zach Clark added six shots and Altieri and Pasquariello each recorded four shots. Lunz and Pensyl each had three points, while Altieri, Mackey and Pasquariello each added two points.
SVC led, 42-35, in shots, including leading in the second and fourth quarters. The Bearcats also picked up two additional ground balls, 37-35, led by
Franklin Howard's seven ground balls.
Wooster won 13 of the 24 face-offs, with
Charlie Russo and
Sean Kretovics each finishing four-of-eight in draws.
Adam Gunter took the loss, playing the whole game and making six saves on the afternoon.
The Bearcats return to action on Saturday, March 23, traveling to Ferrum (Va.) for a 1 p.m. game.
