LATROBE (April 25) - The Saint Vincent softball team was swept by Penn State Altoona by scores of 7-2 and 7-3 in a non-conference doubleheader at Saint Vincent Field.
The losses put the Bearcats at 10-18 on the year, meanwhile the Lions improve to 22-10 this season.
In the opener, the guests plated one run in the second inning and three runs in the third and fourth innings.
The runs in the third inning came on a three-run homer by sophomore first baseman Kelly Chambers, who broke the Penn State Altoona career record with her 17th career blast.
SVC scored two runs in the bottom of the third to make it a 4-2 game. With one out,
Lindsey Daniels singled up the middle and scored on a double by
Maria Adams. After Adams advanced to third on a ground out by
Shannon Baczek, she came in to score on a wild pitch.
Daniels and
Suzie Cool each delivered two hits in the opener, while Adams finished 1-for-1 with a walk, RBI and run scored.
Emily Lauterbach (3-10) took the loss in a complete-game showing, allowing 10 hits and seven earned runs with three walks and three strikeouts.
In the nightcap, SVC struck first with a run in the second inning when
Marisa McAndrews walked to lead off, advanced to second on a passed ball, went to third on a ground out by
Lynn Buffoni and scored on a wild pitch.
The Lions took the lead in the top of the third with a pair of runs, but SVC tied the game, 2-2, in the bottom of the frame.
Shannon Hite led off with a single through the left side and was sacrificed to second by Cool. Adams drove Hite in with an RBI single up the middle to plate the run.
SVC re-took the lead in the bottom of the fourth when McAndrews started the inning with a single to center and was sacrificed over by
Becky Deane. An RBI double by
Sam Shumaker scored McAndrews to put SVC back in front, 3-2.
Penn State Altoona pulled ahead for good in the top of the sixth when Chambers hit her second homer of the day (a two-run shot) with none out. The Lions later added two more runs to take a 6-3 lead before adding on a run in the top of the seventh.
Ally Vrcek suffered the loss, dropping to 6-8 on the season. She pitched all 7.0 innings and gave up nine hits and seven runs (five earned) while walking four and striking out two.
The Bearcats host Grove City on Saturday in the conclusion of the Presidents' Athletic Conference schedule and 2013 season. Before the first pitch of game one at 1 p.m., the five Bearcat seniors will be honored. The team will also be incorporating pink in honor of breast cancer awareness.
