Bearcats win, advance to Championship on Saturday

GREENVILLE, Pa. (April 26) - The Saint Vincent women's lacrosse team avenged Wednesday's loss at Washington & Jefferson with a 10-9 win over the Presidents in the semifinals of the inaugural Presidents' Athletic Conference Championship Tournament.

The Bearcats now advance to the Championship game against top-seeded and host Thiel tomorrow at 2 p.m. Third-seeded SVC improves to 11-4 on the season, while W&J, the second seed, drops to 4-10.

After W&J opened up a 3-1 lead 6:37 into the game, Kaley Burkardt scored two goals in 1:47 to tie the game. W&J answered with a pair of goals to take a 5-3 lead, but Hannah Hackman and Alyssa Lang posted the final two goals of the half to send the two teams into halftime tied, 5-5.

The Presidents struck twice in the first 10 minutes of the second half before SVC rallied for three-straight goals in under four minutes to take its first lead of the game, 8-7, with 14:26 to play. Burkardt, Lang and Nora Posival accounted for the Bearcat scores during the span.

W&J tied the game 1:24 later, but Lang (assisted by Posival) put SVC ahead to stay at 9:52. Posival added an insurance goal at 7:20, with an assist to Burkardt. W&J came within one, 10-9, at 6:09, but SVC held on for the win.

Burkardt, Lang and Posival led the Bearcat with four points apiece, with Burkardt and Lang posting hat tricks. Hackman added two goals in the win.

For the game, SVC held a 29-20 advantage on shots. W&J won three more draw controls, 12-9.

Michelle Mitchell (8-4) earned the win in goal, making six saves in 60 minutes.
