GREENVILLE, Pa. (April 27) - The Saint Vincent women's lacrosse team brought the game within one goal with just over three minutes remaining, but fell, 15-13, to top-seeded Thiel in the championship game of the inaugural Presidents' Athletic Conference championship tournament.
The loss ends the Bearcats season at 11-5, with two of the losses coming to Thiel by a combined three goals. The Tomcats improve to 11-7 and claim the first PAC title. The league will begin officially sponsoring men's and women's lacrosse during the 2014-15 academic year.
Alyssa Lang opened the scoring just 47 seconds into the game and
Maggie Garvey added another at the 26:53 mark to put SVC in the early lead, 2-0. Thiel responded with three-straight goals in under two minutes to take a 3-2 lead.
Hannah Hackman and
Kaley Burkardt then scored goals at 23:20 and 15:00, with
Nora Posival getting assists on both scores, to re-take the lead, 4-3 mid-way through the first half. Thiel answered with a four-goal run that spanned more than four minutes to take a 7-4 lead.
Burkardt and Garvey then scored 1:55 apart to make it a one-goal game, 7-6, but Thiel scored three of the final four goals of the half to take a 10-7 lead into halftime.
SVC cut the margin to one goal four different times in the second half, but Thiel was able to hold off the rally.
After a Tomcat goal started the half, Lang, Posival and Lang again scored to make it 11-10.
Megan Fisher answered a Thiel goal at 15:28 to put the score at 12-11, and Garvey converted a free-position shot to make it 13-12. Burkardt's goal at 3:15 made the score 14-13, but Thiel added a goal with 11 seconds left to seal the 15-13 win.
Thiel out-shot SVC, 27-19, and won 17 of 30 draw controls.
Posival's six points (five assists) were the game high and Burkardt and Garvey each finished with four points, including a hat trick. Lang also added a hat trick in the win.
Michelle Mitchell suffered the loss, making seven saves in 60 minutes.
