GREENVILLE, Pa. (April 6) - The Saint Vincent softball team posted a 6-5 win in the opener, before dropping the nightcap, 3-2, in Presidents' Athletic Conference action at Thiel.
The split moves the Bearcats to 7-7 on the season and 2-4 in the PAC, while Thiel picked up its first league win at 1-3 and is now 6-12 this year.
In the first game, SVC opened the game with a run in the top of the first.
Lindsey Daniels led off with a single and was advanced to second on a bunt by
Sarah Swettlen. Back-to-back walks to
Shayla Landman and
Shannon Baczek loaded the bases and
Maria Adams connected on a sacrifice fly to bring home the run, 1-0.
In the second inning
Shannon Hite tripled with one out and later scored on a wild pitch to put SVC ahead, 2-0. In the third, SVC added a run after four-straight walks with two outs plated a run.
Thiel answered with a run in the bottom of the third before adding two more in the bottom of the fourth to tie the game, 3-3.
SVC opened the game up with three runs in the top of the sixth. Hite walked and advanced to second on a single by Daniels. Hite then scored on a two-base error by the catcher and Daniels took second on the play. Swettlen came to the plate with a runner on and belted her second homer of the season to right center, 6-3.
Thiel scored a run in both the bottom of the sixth and seventh innings, but winning pitcher
Emily Lauterbach was able to hold on for the victory. She went the distance, scattering 10 hits and yielding five earned runs while walking five and striking out three.
Daniels and Swettlen both finished 2-for-4, with Swettlen's home run the eventual game-winning hit. Every player in the SVC lineup reached base at least once as SVC accumulated six hits and eight free passes.
In game two, Thiel scored a single run in each of the top of the first, second and fifth innings to take a 3-0 lead off of SVC starter
Ally Vrcek. The Bearcats rallied in the bottom of the seventh when Baczek led off with a single and pinch runner
Suzie Cool scored when
Maria Adams reached and went to third on an error by the Tomcats' centerfielder. Adams made it a one-run game when she crossed the plate on a ground out by
Sam Shumaker, but Thiel was able to get the next to batter's out to end the game.
Swettlen, Baczek,
Marisa McAndrews and Hite each recorded one of SVC's four hits in the loss.
Vrcek went the distance, yielding nine hits and three earned runs while striking out five and walking one.
SVC returns to action on Monday, April 8 with a doubleheader against Penn State-Fayette, scheduled for a 3 p.m. start. It will be the first home games of the season for the Bearcats.
