Bearcats win home contest over Waynesburg

Saint Vincent College defeated Waynesburg University 98-82 in a Presidents' Athletic Conference matchup.
 
In the first half, the Bearcats started off strong, going up 11-2, with just over three minutes played. Several minutes later, SVC extended its strong lead to 21-8 capped off by an Ally Schmidt layup.
 
However, the visitors drew back within four after a timeout propelled them to a 9-0 run, making the score 21-17 with 9:15 left in the first.
 
The Bearcats were feeling the pressure, but with help from threes by Jessica Welch, Jillian Kegg, and a conventional three point play from Taylor Mathers, the Bearcats went back up by eight.
 
Waynesburg fought through the final minutes of the first half and kept it close heading the locker room only down six (43-37). Fouls played a major role in the first half score, with 31 fouls being called and 39 free throws attempted. Mathers led the way with nine points while Kegg had eight.
 
The second half saw the two teams trading baskets through the first seven minutes. With SVC up 56-45, Jasmine Weems would then go on a tear scoring seven of the next 10 points to put the hosts up 66-47.
 
The game continued to be closely called with 26 fouls called in the second half. However, the Bearcats would extend their lead to as much as 24 points through the final five minutes. Waynesburg would go on a 12-0 run to diminish the lead to 12 at 85-73, but Saint Vincent would not let it get any closer.
 
For the Bearcats, Mathers led the way with 23 points and nine rebounds. Elle Collins and Kegg had 19 and 17 respectively, while Kegg tallied 11 rebounds and six assists. Weems also scored in double figures with 12.
 
With the win, SVC improves 10-5 (7-1 PAC). They will travel to Pittsburgh on Saturday afternoon to play Chatham.
