A strong start, coupled with a fast finish, allowed the Bearcats to earn a 73-62 Presidents' Athletic Conference victory over Grove City College at the Carey Center.
JC Howard scored the game's first six points, helping the hosts to a 12-0 advantage in the first five minutes of play.
The Wolverines eventually fought back to cut the gap to three (14-11) near the midway point of the first half.
Later in the half, a pair of free throws by
Sean Kett once again ran the lead to nine, 25-16, and the Bearcats maintained the lead the remainder of the half. Â
Dillon Stith gave the team additional momentum going into the break with a thunderous dunk off an alley-oop pass by Howard in the final minute. Â At the half, SVC led by a score of 33-25.
Early in the second half, the Bearcats increased the lead to twelve, 40-28, but Grove City was far from finished. Â With 8:15 to go, a score by JT Schwartz gave the visitors their first lead of the day, 52-51, but the lead wouldn't last long. Â
Ben Klimchock drained a three-pointer on the ensuing possession to put the hosts back in front with 7:50 left. Â After GCC tied the game a minute later,
Isaac Turner scored to return to the lead to the SVC side, then
Pat Jones hit a key three pointer to extend the lead to four, 59-55.
Turner then scored the Bearcats' next six points, as SVC carried a 65-60 lead into the final two minutes. Â After a Grove City bucket made it 65-62 with 1:40 to go, the Bearcat defense clamped down on the Wolverines, keeping them off the board the rest of the game while adding a three by Howard and five free throws to seal the win.
Turner led all scorers with 20 points, while Stith added 17 points and 14 rebounds. Â Howard tallied 14 points, 8 boards and six assists, with Kett adding 11 points.
For the Wolverines, Mitch Marmelstein had 18 points and 10 rebounds. Â
Saint Vincent is now 10-2 on the season, 3-0 in the PAC. Â Grove City falls to 5-6 (2-2). Â The Bearcats will return to action on Wednesday evening at 7:30 in the Carey Center, hosing Thiel College. Â
