Saint Vincent defeated Grove City 84-67 Saturday afternoon in the Carey Center in a game that featured a combined 65 free throws.

The Bearcats and Wolverines exchanged baskets for most of the first half, but a 16-3 run to end the first half propelled the Bearcats to a 48-33 lead going into the break.

Mara Benvenuti broke the game open with just over five minutes to play in the first half as she contributed seven consecutive points during a 9-0 Saint Vincent run that put the Bearcats ahead 39-30. Benvenuti surpassed her career high in scoring in just the first half, tallying 15 first half points.

Grove City's Kelsey Shirey and Austinette Rodriguez each contributed nine points for the Wolverines in the first half, while Annie Wells tallied six to help keep the Wolverines in the game.

Saint Vincent went to the free throw line 16 times in the first half, converting on 15 of those attempts.Â

The second half was not much different, as Saint Vincent used strong free throw shooting to maintain their lead.

Saint Vincent went on another 9-0 run at the 9:16 mark when freshman guard
Jasmine Weems hit her first bucket of the game from downtown. The run was capped off by another three-pointer from fellow freshman
Susie Ellis.

Grove City strung together a late 7-0 run to pull to within 18 (83-65), but the deficit was too much for the Wolverines to overcome.

Saint Vincent shot 79.3% from the free-throw line and 36% from the field. sophomore guard Jill Kegg went a perfect 6-6 from the charity stripe, while junior guard
Elle Collins went 3-3 and Benvenuti went 4-4 as well.

Benvenuti's 15 points was the second highest total of the game. Grove City's Kelsey Shirey scored 17, going 5-11 from beyond the arc.

The victory improved the Bearcats to 7-4 overall and a 4-0 mark in President's Athletic Conference play, while GCC is now 1-9 overall, 0-4 in the PAC.
