The Westminster Titans upset the Saint Vincent women's basketball team by a score of 85-74 in Presidents' Athletic Conference play.
The Bearcats started with a 5-0 run
Taylor Mathers laying in four. However, through the next four minutes the Titans would go on a 10-0 run of their own, forcing a host timeout for them to regain composure.
Westminster held the lead through the next six minutes, up by as many as five.
Jasmine Weems would put up a good effort to keep the game tight for the Bearcats, scoring six consecutive points, making the score 15-11.
Her teammates would follow suit when
Mara Benvenuti and
Drew Meeker hit back-to-back threes which put them up one (19-18). Mathers would go on a streak for five straight points to extend the lead to four (24-20).
The final five minutes saw the Bearcats go on a 12-1 run highlighted by
Hannah Carroll's six points and Benvenuti's four. SVC would go into the half leading 40-31. Mathers led all scorers into the locker room with nine points.
In the second half, the teams traded baskets through the first four minutes and the Bearcats maintained a six point lead (46-40).
With Saint Vincent holding a 55-43 lead, however, the Titans used a 13-0 run to give them the one point edge with 9:00 to play.
Now down 64-63, the Bearcats lost a key component for the game when Mathers fouled out at the 5:35 mark. She would finish as the leading scorer for SVC.
Through the final five minutes, Westminster forced several turnovers and got to the free throw line at will on the offensive end (team finished 28-36 from the stripe) helping increase their lead with the hosts unable to mount the deficit.
For Saint Vincent, Mathers had 15 points, two blocks and three steals, followed by Benvenuti with 13 points, six boards, and four assists. Also in double figures for SVC were Meeker with 12 and
Hannah Carroll with 11. Weems put down seven points and six assists.
With the loss, the Bearcats record stands at 13-6 (10-2, PAC). They will travel to Thiel on Wednesday for another conference matchup. Tipoff is 5:30.
