The Saint Vincent women's basketball team completed a season sweep over the Thiel Tomcats with an 89-59 victory on the road in snowy Greenville, PA.
Â
Both teams came out shooting in the opening minutes, with a bucket by
Elle Collins giving SVC a 10-8 lead just three minutes into play. The game remained close until
Jasmine Weems hit back-to-back three pointers to give the Bearcats a 22-16 lead at the 14:20 mark.
Â
After a pair of quick timeouts by the hosts, SVC started to pull away. A steal and fast break by
Ally Schmidt made the score 29-22 with 11:15 to go in the first half, and a
Mara Benvenuti three off an inbound pass by Schmidt moments later ran the lead to ten, 32-22.
Â
From there it was all Saint Vincent, as the team shot 54% from the floor en route to a 59-37 lead at the break.
Â
The second half was played at a slower tempo, as SVC was led by
Jessica Welch's 10 points in the final 20 minutes.
Welch was joined in double figures for the Bearcats by
Taylor Mathers (14), Weems (11) and Briana Zajac and
Elle Collins (10 each). Â Zajac had a team best 8 rebounds, while Collins added 7. Â
Susie Ellis tallied four steals.
For Thiel, Jaclyn Watkins had 27 points and 10 boards.
SVC (14-6, 11-2 Presidents' Athletic Conference) will return to action on Saturday at Grove City. Â
