The Saint Vincent softball team played its first games in Pennsylvania for the season, sweeping a road doubleheader at Penn State-Fayette by scores of 11-3 and 10-0.
Game one was scoreless into the third inning, when
Laken Lyon singled to lead off. After a sacrifice bunt by
Suzie Cool,
Lindsey Daniels doubled home the first run of the game. Later in the inning, Daniels scored on a
Sarah Swettlen single. Swettlen later scored on an error, giving the visiting Bearcats a 3-0 lead.
In the fourth,
Shannon Baczek walked to lead off. After
Marisa McAndrews was hit by a pitch, Lyon then bunted pinch-runner
Kristin Segiel to third and McAndrews to second. Segiel scored when Cool reached on an error, then
Samantha Emert singled home a pair of runs. A Swettlen doubled brought home Emert, giving SVC a 7-0 lead.
After the Lions scored three runs in the bottom of the fourth, the Bearcats added four more runs in the fifth inning.
Becky Deane started the inning with a single before yielding to pinch runner
Raelyn Fencik. Baczek doubled home Fencik, then scored on a McAndrews double, making the score 9-0. Lyon followed with another double, and later scored when Cool once again reached on an error, giving the Bearcats an 11-3 lead.
Emert worked the first four innings and picked up the victory, striking out two.
Cassidy Uscilowski worked a scoreless fifth inning.
In game two, SVC struck quickly, scoring twice in the top of the first. Daniels led off with a walk, then moved to second on a single by Emert. Swettlen singled home Daniels, and Deane later drove home Emert with a single.
Swettlen doubled to lead off the third inning, and Deane drove her home with a single that made the score 3-0 in favor of the Bearcats.
Cool singled to lead off the SVC half of the fourth, and Daniels then hit an inside-the-park home run, giving SVC a 5-0 lead. The Bearcats were far from finished, and Emert followed with a single and moved to second on an error. With two outs, Deane grounded out, scoring Emert.
Breanne Wallace, who had walked, scored on a Baczek double, making the score 7-0.
In the fifth, SVC took advantage of a pair of errors, scoring three more runs.
Ally Panzella's fielder's choice scored
Samantha Geracia, who had reached on an error to start the inning. Later, with the bases loaded, Wallace drew a walk, scoring
Alie Reid.
Kelley Sedlock drove in the game's final run on a fielder's choice.
Ally Vrcek threw the first four innings, striking out five, while
Laken Lyon struck out three batters in a scoreless fifth to seal the win.
SVC is now 7-3 on the season. Weather permitting, the team will travel to Pittsburgh on Tuesday afternoon for a doubleheader at La Roche College.
