BOX SCORE - GAME ONE
BOX SCORE - GAME TWO
After dropping the first game of a doubleheader, the SVC softball team received a strong outing from senior
Ally Vrcek, while classmate
Lindsey Daniels had the game-winning hit in extra innings to defeat Penn State-Altoona, 3-2.
Vrcek found herself locked in a pitchers' duel through the first five innings, but got into trouble in the sixth, walking a pair of batters. Â With two out, a clutch two-run single gave the host Lions a 2-0 lead.
The Bearcats had their backs to the wall going to the top of the 7th inning, but got a one-out double from
Breanne Wallace. Â
Becky Deane then singled to left, moving pinch-runner
Raelyn Fencik to third. Â
Shannon Baczek, another senior, hit a sacrifice fly to score Fencik. Â Pinch-runner
Kristin Segiel moved to second on a throwing error, putting the tying run in scoring position with two outs. Â Two passed balls later, Segiel scored, knotting the game, 2-2.Â
Vrcek kept the Lions off the board in the bottom of the 7th, sending the game to extra innings.
Using international rules,
Alie Reid was placed on second to start the top of the 8th. Â With one out, Daniels doubled, driving home what would prove to be the game-winning run.
In the bottom of the 8th, an Altoona runner was placed on 2nd base to start the inning, but Vrcek didn't allow her to score, giving SVC the 3-2 win. Â
Earlier in the afternoon, Altoona took advantage of a wild pitch and an error to score three runs, two of which were unearned, in the bottom of the first off SVC starter
Laken Lyon (3-1). Â The hosts then added two more runs in the second and five more in the fourth. Â Saint Vincent managed just two hits, singles by Daniels and Segiel, in the five-inning contest.
With the split, Saint Vincent is now 10-4 on the season. Â The team will open the home portion of the 2014 schedule on Saturday at 1PM with a doubleheader against Franciscan University of Steubenville.
