SVC falls to Ferrum in final minute, 9-8

LATROBE (Mar. 22) - Saint Vincent rallied from a two-goal deficit in the second half, but a goal with under 30 seconds remaining sent Ferrum to a 9-8 victory at Chuck Noll Field.

The loss drops the Bearcats to 1-7 on the season, while the Panthers improve to 3-8 this year.

SVC opened the game with a 2-0 lead as Tim Oxenreiter opened the scoring 1:29 in with an unassisted goal. Oxenreiter then found Nick Pensyl at the 11:13 mark to extend the lead. Ferrum got on the board with 3:10 left in the first quarter, but Steven Cosgrove ended the period with a goal with under 30 seconds remaining as SVC led, 3-1.

The Panthers roared a 4-3 lead with three-straight goals within the first 4:18 of the second quarter. Bryce Pasquariello tied the game at the 7:04 mark on a Pensyl assist, but Ferrum answered 38 seconds later to make the game, 5-4, which was the margin at halftime.

Each team scored a goal in the third quarter as Ferrum built its lead to two goals, 6-4, with 11:40 to play, but Pensyl answered at the 8:12 mark to bring SVC back within one goal.

The beginning of the fourth quarter saw SVC re-take the lead in the first 4:32 as Oxenreiter assisted on another goal by Pensyl and Pasquariello scored from the ground after being pushed down in front of the net, 7-6.

Ferrum tied the game and then eventually captured the lead with a pair of scores within 44 seconds, but a man-up goal by Pasquariello (assisted by Pensyl) tied the game, 8-8, with 3:24 remaining. The game-winning goal by Ferrum came with 29 seconds left, and SVC was unable to answer before time ran out.

Behind double-digit shot totals in each quarter, Ferrum boasted a 53-26 advantage on shots. SVC goalkeeper Greg Gonzalez was stellar in goal, making 21 saves in 60 minutes.

Charlie Russo won 11-of-20 face-offs for the Bearcats in the game.

Pensyl led all players with five points as he and Pasquariello each tallied hat tricks.

SVC will be off until Wednesday, Apr. 2 with a 4 p.m. home game against Baldwin-Wallace.
