The Saint Vincent softball team opened the home portion of the 2014 schedule with a doubleheader sweep over Franciscan University of Steubenville by scores of 8-1 and 10-0.
SVC got off to a fast start in the first game, scoring five runs in the bottom of the first, taking advantage of six walks. Â Singles by
Samantha Emert and
Breanne Wallace and a sacrifice fly by
Molly Patsch also contributed to the lead.
In the third,
Sarah Swettlen led off with a home run over the right field fence that made the score 6-0. Â
Laken Lyon was strong in the circle, striking out the side in the first and adding two more strikeouts through three innings of work before yielding to
Cassidy Uscilowski.
Wallace hit a one-out double in the fourth for the Bearcats, later scoring on a fielder's choice ground ball off the bat of Uscilowski, giving the hosts a 7-0 advantage. Â
The Barons got a leadoff bunt single by Kim Muscat in the 5th, and the runner later scored on a single by Serra Alonji, but Alonji was thrown out by left fielder
Ally Panzella trying to stretch the hit to a double, ending the inning. Â
SVC added another run in the 6th, and Uscilowski (2-1) finished off the victory with a 1-2-3 seventh inning. Â
The second game started with a pair of strikeouts by pitcher Emert in the top of the first, and SVC quickly gained control in the bottom half of the inning. Â Daniels and Emert both reached on errors, then scored on a double by Wallace. Â A single by Lyon later brought home Wallace to make the score 3-0.
In the second,
Marisa McAndrews led off with a single and moved to third on a double by Daniels. Â After a walk to Emert loaded the bases, Swettlen grounded into a fielder's choice that erased McAndrews at the plate. Â However, a wild pitch scored Daniels to make it 4-0. Â Wallace then singled, scoring Emert. Â Later in the inning, after a walk to
Becky Deane loaded the bases, Lyon reached on an infield single that brought in another run, making the score 6-0.
SVC added three more runs in the bottom of the fourth. Â
Christina Folino walked to lead off the inning, then flashed blazing speed, stealing second. Â A bunt single by
Kristin Segiel put runners at the corners, and
Raelyn Fencik walked to load the bases. Â McAndrews then grounded into a fielder's choice, with Folino out at the plate, but the bases remained loaded. Â Daniels then hit a fly ball that was misplayed in left field, allowing all three runs to score.
Kelley Sedlock came on to get the final three outs, sealing the 10-0 victory for Saint Vincent (12-4).
Next up for SVC is a visit from Penn State-Beaver for a doubleheader on Tuesday at 3PM.
