SVC drops first game of season, 14-13

BEREA, Ohio (Mar. 21) - The Saint Vincent women's lacrosse team dropped its first game of the season with a 14-13 defeat at Baldwin-Wallace.

The loss drops the Bearcats to 4-1 on the year, while Baldwin-Wallace improves to 4-2.

The two teams played a close first 30 minutes, with the scored tied, 6-6, at halftime. After three-straight B-W goals put the hosts ahead 4-2 with 10:44 remaining in the period, Helena Shoplik and Molly Snyder tied the game with goals 16 seconds apart. Two Kaley Burkardt goals and a pair of Yellow Jackets' scores and the two teams were tied at the half.

SVC built a 10-8 lead with 13:39 left in the game on a free position shot by Natalie Ambrozic, but three-straight B-W goals gave the hosts the lead, 11-10, with 7:36 remaining.

A goal by Maggie Garvey at the 6:45 mark tied the game, but the hosts pulled away with three goals in a 1:08 span to seal the game. SVC scored goals at the 2:10 and 31 second-marks, but were unable to overcome the late three-goal deficit.

Burkardt and Garvey each paced SVC with six points, with Burkardt tallying four goals and Garvey adding three goals. Snyder finished with five points, including three assists.

Michelle Mitchell suffered the defeat despite making nine saves in 60 minutes.

SVC will travel to Allegheny on Tuesday, Mar. 25 for a 4 p.m. meeting with the Gators, whose SID is former Bearcat great Jim Berger.
