SVC downed at Allegheny, 20-14

MEADVILLE, Pa. (Mar. 25) - The Saint Vincent women's lacrosse team dropped its second-straight game, falling at unbeaten Allegheny by a score of 20-14.

The loss drops the Bearcats to 4-2 on the season, while the undefeated Gators improve to 8-0.

Molly Snyder tied the game, 1-1, 4:03 into the game following an early Allegheny goal. Natalie Ambrozic picked up the assist on the score. The hosts, however, answered with five-straight goals over a seven minute span to take a 6-1 lead at the 16:55-mark. Sarah Wallerstedt ended the run at 16:04, but Allegheny scored two more goals to push the margin to 8-2.

Over the final 10 minutes of the first half, SVC out-scored Allegheny 4-1 to get within 9-6 at halftime. Kaley Burkardt scored on a free position shot at 9:36 and Snyder found the back of the net just 12 seconds later to score for SVC. Welch scored her first goal of the game with two minutes left in the period and Wallerstedt scored with 15 seconds left to send SVC into the break down three goals.

The Gators began the second half by scoring the first five goals of the period over the first five minutes, but a three minute SVC 4-0 run gave the Bearcats some hope. Ambrozic took a pass from Snyder and scored at the 23:33-mark to make it 14-7, and Burkardt and Maggie Garvey each scored within a minute to give the Bearcats some momentum. Welch posted her second goal on a free-position shot at the 20:40-mark and SVC trailed, 14-10.

Over the next four minutes, Allegheny put the game away with four consecutive goals. Garvey and Helena Shoplik scored over the final 12 minutes and Snyder added a pair of goals 10 seconds apart with Wallerstedt assisting on both as the final score read 20-14.

Snyder led SVC with eight points (four goals, four assists). Wallerstedt added four points (two goals and two assists) and Welch finished with three points (two goals, one assist).

For the game, Allegheny held a narrow 29-28 advantage on shots as SVC out-shot the hosts, 17-15, in the second half.

Michelle Mitchell suffered the loss, making four saves, including two in each half.

SVC returns home for a 1 p.m. game on Saturday, Mar. 29 against Wooster (Ohio).
