HUNTINGDON, Pa. (Mar. 27) - The Bearcats rallied from a four-run deficit to post a 9-5 win in eight innings in the opener before
Ally Vrcek and
Cassidy Uscilowski combined for a no-hitter in the nightcap as SVC posted a 10-1 win in six innings in a sweep at Juniata.
The wins improve the Saint Vincent softball team to 14-4 on the season with Presidents' Athletic Conference play set to begin on Saturday, Mar. 29 at Grove City. Juniata falls to 3-15 this year.
In the opener, the Bearcats fell behind 3-0 in the first inning after the Eagles posted an RBI double and two-run homer. After an RBI ground out by the hosts stretched the margin to 4-0 through two innings.
The Bearcats got on the board with a run in the top of the fourth as
Alie Reid scored when
Jenna LoVasco reached on an error, but Juniata answered back in the bottom half of the inning to take a 5-1 lead through four frames.
SVC would dominate the rest of the game, scoring eight runs over the final four innings, including four in the eighth to post the 9-5 victory.
Raelyn Fencik scored on a
Breanne Wallace RBI double in the fifth.
Shannon Baczek scored on a passed ball in the sixth that advanced
Laken Lyon to third, who would later scored on an RBI single by
Samantha Emert.
Baczek's RBI double in the top of the seventh scored
Kristin Segiel who was on base after pinch running for Wallace who had reached on a strikeout-wild pitch.
The eighth inning started with
Suzie Cool on second base as the international tiebreaker was utilized.
Lindsey Daniels led off with a sacrifice to move Cool to third and
Sarah Swettlen doubled to left center following a walk to Emert. With two outs a single by
Becky Deane scored Swettlen and Emert and a double by
Christina Folino pushed Deane across the plate and capped the inning.
Emert threw the final two innings in relief of Lyon to earn her fifth win of the season. In 2.0 innings, she allowed just one hit and struck out a batter. Lyon worked the first 6.0 innings, throwing 119 pitches and surrendering 10 hits, five runs (four earned) with five strikeouts and a walk.
Emert led SVC in going 3-for-4 with an RBI and run scored. Seven other Bearcats added a hit with Baczek, Folino, Swettlen and Wallace notching RBI doubles.
The only run through the first three innings of the second game was on an RBI ground out by LoVasco that scored Baczek in the top of the second, 1-0.
SVC, however, exploded for six runs in the top of the fourth inning to break open the game. Lyon led off with a double and stole third before scoring on a LoVasco RBI single. Later in the inning, Wallace came up with the bases loaded and ripped a double to left center that scored two. Deane then reached on an error that led to another run and Wallace and Deane then scored on Baczek's two-run single to right center.
Juniata's only run of the contest came in the bottom of the fourth when Vrcek walked the lead off batter who advanced to second on a sacrifice and then went to third and scored on wild pitches.
The Bearcats tacked on a run in the fifth when Fencik scored on a wild pitch and then two more in the sixth on an RBI single by
Candace Scanga that also saw a run score on an error by the center fielder.
Vrcek (3-1) picked up the win in working the first 5.0 innings and striking out three and walking three. Uscilowski faced the minimum in her inning of relief with a strike out.
Baczek and Lyon each ended the game 2-for-3 with Baczek, LoVasco and Wallace tallying two RBI apiece. Scanga went 2-for-2 with one of SVC's four doubles.
