Bearcats post victory over Fighting Scots, 13-9

LATROBE (Mar. 29) - The Bearcats built a 6-2 lead at halftime and were able to withstand a second-half rally for a 13-9 win over Wooster (Ohio) on the SVC Turf.

With the win, the Saint Vincent women's lacrosse team improves to 5-2 on the season while the Fighting Scots drop to 0-3 this year.

After 5:12 had elapsed in the game Maggie Garvey found the back of the net for the game's first goal. Wooster answered more than two minutes later to the the game at 1-1. Snyder's first goal of the game put SVC back ahead for good at the 21:16 mark and Natalie Ambrozic scored two minutes after to put SVC ahead 3-1.

The Scots got within a goal with 8:59 to play in the half, but Helena Shoplik scored just 22 seconds later to push the lead back to two goals, 4-2. Snyder scored a pair of goals in the final two minutes of the first period to send SVC into halftime with a 6-2 lead.

In the second half, the two teams combined for 14 goals with seven apiece. They traded goals in the first 1:39 with Snyder putting the Bearcats up 7-3. Wooster scored the next three goals to get within a goal, 7-6, at the 23:20-mark, but five-straight Bearcat scores pushed the lead to 12-6 and helped SVC add some insurance. Sarah Wallerstedt scored the first goal of the run and then Shoplik and Kaley Burkardt each added two goals over the next seven minutes. Shoplik's first goal of the run came just nine seconds after Wallerstedt scored when she picked up the draw control and sprinted straight to the goal.

The Bearcats weathered three Wooster goals and Ambrozic capped the game with 53 seconds left to make the final score 13-9.

SVC held a slight, 27-26, edge on shots, including a 19-13 lead in the first half. They also picked up 13 draw controls to Wooster's 11.

Snyder led all players with eight points on four goals and four assists. Shoplik recorded a hat trick with three goals, while Ambrozic and Burkardt each posted two goals and an assist.

Michelle Mitchell was tremendous in goal all afternoon, making 11 saves, with six coming in the second half, to earn her fifth win of the season.

The Bearcats return to action on Wednesday, April 2 with a 4 p.m. game at Franciscan (Ohio).
