SVC runs winning streak to five games, 17-10

BUCKHANNON, W.Va. (April 13) - The Saint Vincent women's lacrosse team ran its' winning streak to five games with a 17-10 win at NCAA Division II West Virginia Wesleyan.

With the win, the Bearcats improve to 9-2 on the season, having won their last five games by an average of 9.4 goals per game. The Bobcats drop to 4-10 on the season.

Maggie Garvey, Sarah Wallerstedt and Molly Snyder gave SVC a 3-0 lead through the game's first five minutes before the hosts roared back with four-straight goals to take a 4-3 lead with 17:04 to play in the first half.

SVC countered with four consecutive goals in a 2:31 span, including two by Kaley Burkardt, to take a 7-4 lead at the 14:11-mark.

The teams traded goals for the remainder of the first half, with SVC posting a slight, 4-3, edge to take an 11-7 lead into halftime.

After West Virginia Wesleyan opened the second half with a goal at 21:25, SVC scored the next five goals to open up a 16-8 lead and put the game out of reach. Snyder scored a pair during the span, with Burkardt, Helena Shoplik and Garvey contributing the other scores. The hosts scored two of the final three goals in the contest, but SVC posted the 17-10 win.

For the contest, SVC held a 35-26 lead on shots behind a 21-12 advantage in the first half. Snyder led all players with seven points (three goals, four assists), while Burkardt contributed five points, including four goals. Garvey (three goals) and Wallerstedt (two goals, one assist) each added three points.

Michelle Mitchell earned her ninth win of the season, making 12 saves in 60 minutes, nine of which came in the second half.

The Bearcats host Frostburg State (Md.) on Wednesday, April 16 at 4 p.m. in the regular season finale for the 2014 season.
