BOX SCOREThe Saint Vincent Bearcats went on an early 16-0 run and never looked back, defeating Washington & Jefferson by a score of 90-61 in the Carey Center.
With the win, Saint Vincent improves to 7-0 in the Presidents' Athletic Conference, setting up a showdown with #2-ranked Thomas More College on Saturday (January 17) in Kentucky.
The Presidents scored the game's first 6 points on a pair of three-pointers, but SVC answered with 16 straight points, as
Mara Benvenuti started the run at the 18:11 mark with a pull-up jumper. Â After
Hannah Carroll hit a three,
Ally Schmidt went coast-to-coast and scored, giving the Bearcats a 7-6 lead, and from there the team pulled away from the visitors. Â A pair of buckets by
Taylor Mathers, surrounding another three by Carroll, making it 14-6. Â After a W&J timeout, the SVC run continued with another score by Mathers at the 14:10 mark.
W&J then scored to make it 16-8, but SVC rattled off six more points, making it 22-8.
Later in the half, a conventional three-point play by Mathers made it a 20-point lead 43-23, and SVC took a 49-25 advantage into the locker room.
Valerie Dunlap came out of the locker room and scored 8 quick points for the Presidents, but the Bearcats regrouped quickly and maintained a large lead throughout the second half.
Mathers led all scorers with 16 points and grabbed 15 rebounds, one shy of her career high. Â Carroll added 13 points, while Schmidt and
Drew Meeker each tallied 11. Â
Jill Kegg had 6 assists.
Saint Vincent is now 13-1 overall on the season, while W&J drops to 10-4, 4-3 in the conference.
The Bearcats will travel to Crestview Hills, KY for the game against Thomas More, tipoff slated for 1PM.
