Saint Vincent rolls to win at Transylvania in ORLC play

LEXINGTON, Ky. (March 22) – The Saint Vincent women's lacrosse team used a dominant performance to roll to a 18-7 victory and stay unbeaten in Ohio River Lacrosse action.
 
Sophomore Sarah Wallerstedt led all SVC scorers with six goals. Meanwhile, senior Molly Snyder put together a solid all-around offensive day, scoring four goals and adding four assists to total eight points. Freshman Katie Stallings chipped in three goals and an assist in the victory.
 
The Bearcats drew first blood behind a pair of goals from Wallerstedt over the first five minutes of play.
 
Transylvania then battled back with two scores to draw even at 2-2 with 22:48 to play in the first half.
 
That is when SVC took control, scoring nine unanswered goals to finish the first half. The scoring run was started by Stallings, who scored the next two goals to help push the Bearcats back in front 4-2.
 
Snyder then doubled the Bearcats lead with two straight goals of her own, giving SVC a 6-2 advantage with 9:13 remaining in the first half of play.
 
Sophomore Hannah Carroll then added a goal on a free position shot before senior Natalie Ambrozic tacked on the Bearcats eighth goal of the match. Ambrozic scored off a pass from Snyder to make it 8-2 Bearcats with 5:34 remaining in the half.
 
Wallerstedt then tacked on two more goals, giving her four for the first half. Junior Helena Shoplik tacked on a goal right before halftime to make it 11-2 after the first 30 minutes.
 
The Bearcats continued the offensive onslaught in the second half. Snyder scored off a pass from Stallings then Wallerstedt added another goal, assisted by freshman Maggie Nelson. Nelson then added another Bearcats goal to strengthen the lead to 14-2 with 21:35 to play.
 
Transylvania finally stopped the Bearcats streak of 12 straight goals with a goal of their own with 20:24 to play in the contest. Stallings and Wallerstedt then tacked on goals to push the Bearcats lead to 16-3.
 
The home team scored three straight goals to cut their deficit to 16-6 with 9:18 remaining. Snyder then continued her strong day with her fourth goal of the afternoon, making it 17-6 Bearcats. The teams traded a pair of goals to close out the scoring, Nelson tallied her second of the day to make it 18-7.
 
Senior goalkeeper Michelle Mitchell made seven saves in the victory. SVC held a decided 31-15 advantage in shots and were successful on all 15 clear attempts in the contest.
 
SVC  (4-5, 3-0) returns to action tomorrow afternoon when they face Defiance College in Ohio. Start time is slated for 5 p.m.
