PHOTO GALLERY CLERMONT, Fla (March 4) - Down to their final out in game one, senior outfielder
Ally Panzella delivered a clutch two-run double to left center field to lift Saint Vincent to a 4-3 victory over Elizabethtown College before dropping their final Spring Break contest to Otterbein, 12-8.
SVC took an early lead over Elizabethtown when
Breanne Wallace singled home
Emily Duerr, giving SVC a 1-0 advantage in the second inning. After E-Town tied the game in the second inning, freshman
Shelby Noel launched her first collegiate home run over the center field fence, making it 2-1 SVC in the third inning.
Elizabethtown got unearned runs in the fourth and sixth to take a 3-2 lead into the final inning. However, that is when Panzella lifted SVC to victory with a double to score
Courtney Patterson and
Samantha Emert.
Sarah Swettlen, Duerr and Patterson all recorded two hits in the victory. SVC left 12 runners on base in the game but Panzella came through to five the Bearcats their third one-run win of the season.
Sophomore pitcher
Laken Lyon earned her first win of the season, pitching all seven innings. Lyon scattered six hits, striking out three and walking none.
Against Otterbein, SVC scored twice in the bottom of the first, as Swettlen led off with a double, followed by a walk to Patterson. Â
Shelby Noel singled home Swettlen, and Patterson later scored on a sacrifice fly by
Kelsey Lineberger.
A bases loaded walk to Duerr in the second inning increased the lead to 3-0, but Otterbein stormed back for five runs over the next two innings to take a 5-3 lead. Â SVC battled back in the bottom of the fourth thanks to a two-out rally. Â After walks to Patterson and Noel, Duerr singled home a run, and Noel later scored on a passed ball to tie the game.
Otterbein, however, came back with 7 runs on just three hits, taking advantage of two Bearcat errors in the top of the fifth to put the game out of reach. Â SVC came back with three runs in the bottom half of the inning, but it wasn't enough.
Cassidy Uscilowski took the loss in the circle, giving up six earned runs. Â Noel and Lineberger each had two hits.
SVC finished its Florida trip with a record of 6-2 and is slated to return to action at home on March 14, facing Penn State-Fayette in a 1PM twinbill.
