GREENVILLE, Pa. (April 10) -
Samantha Emert and
Emily Duerr both posted stellar pitching performances to help the Saint Vincent softball team to a doubleheader sweep over Thiel in Presidents' Athletic Conference play. SVC took game one 6-0 behind a shutout from Emert, while Duerr helped helped the Bearcats with the bat and her arm in game two, winning 5-2.
The wins improved Saint Vincent to 15-3 overall and 3-1 in PAC play. Meanwhile, the losses dropped Thiel to 10-10 overall and 3-5 in league play.
Emert improved her record to 6-1 on the season, tossing a complete game shutout. Emert allowed just two hits while striking out five over seven innings of work in game one.
Freshman
Shelby Noel helped pace the Bearcats offensive attack, going 3 for 4 with a double and two RBIs. Sophomore catcher
Breanne Wallace went 4 for 4 at the plate while also scoring a run. Freshman shortstop
Courtney Patterson chipped in two hits and two runs scored.
Noel got the Bearcats on the board in game one with a RBI double to plate Patterson in the top of the third inning. SVC tacked on five insurance runs in the top of the seventh inning. Patterson and Noel put together back-to-back hits to make it 2-0. After a single by Duerr, sophomore
Kelsey Lineberger added an RBI single of her own, making it 3-0.
Senior
Ally Panzella drew a bases loaded walk for an RBI to make it 4-0, Emert reached on an error to bring home another run before
Sarah Swettlen also drew a bases loaded walk to push the SVC advantage to 6-0.
Duerr delivered in game two, knocking in a pair of runs on a single in the top of the first. SVC tacked on an unearned run in the fifth inning, strengthening their lead to 3-0.
SVC added more insurance runs in the seventh inning.
Laken Lyon singled and
Christina Folino followed with a double to the wall, putting runners at second and third with one out. Noel brought Lyon home on an error, making it 4-0 Saint Vincent. Duerr singled home Folino to push the score to 5-0.
Thiel scored a pair of runs in the bottom of the seventh but their rally came up short and they couldn't avoid the sweep.
Wallace went 3 for 3 at the plate in game two to put together a perfect 7-for-7 hitting performance, improving her average to .487 for the season. Duerr pitched a complete game to improve her record to 6-0 this season.
SVC continues their busy weekend with a doubleheader tomorrow (April 11) at Geneva College. First pitch is slated for 1 p.m.
