BOX SCORELATROBE, Pa. (April 15) - The Saint Vincent women's lacrosse team pulled away in the second half for a 17-8 victory over W&J in Ohio River Lacrosse Conference action at Chuck Noll Field.
With the win the Bearcats improved to 11-6 overall and 8-0 in the ORLC. Meanwhile, the visiting Presidents dropped to 8-4 overall and 6-2 in conference play.
The two teams battled in a back and forth first half.
Maggie Nelson and
Hannah Carroll opened the scoring with a goal each, giving SVC a 2-0 advantage just a little over a minute into the contest. W&J would respond back with three goals to take their first lead.
After an SVC goal tied things up, the Presidents got another goal to take a 4-3 lead with 19:16 remaining in the first half. Nelson and
Sarah Wallerstedt responded back with scores, helping SVC regain a 5-4 advantage at the 15:58 mark of the first half.
After W&J tied the match at 5-5, SVC scored two of the final three first half goals, taking a 7-6 lead into the break. Nelson and Carroll picked up the scores for SVC.
Saint Vincent gained control in the second half, scoring eight of the first nine goals, to take a 15-7 edge with 10:55 to play. During the run, Carroll tallied three goals while freshman
Katie Stallings chipped in two goals, as the Bearcats put the match out of reach.
W&J finally scored a goal with 10:33 to play before Nelson and Carroll each found the back of the net to close out the scoring.
Carroll netted a season-high seven goals, while Nelson chipped in five to push her season total to a team-high of 55. Wallerstedt and Stallings each had two goals, while
Molly Snyder registered a team-best three assists.
The victory helped the Bearcats seal up the #1 seed and hosting rights for the first ever ORLC Tournament, which will be held on April 24-25.
Saint Vincent concludes the regular season with a road match at Mount St. Joseph on Sunday, April 19. Start time is slated for 12 p.m.
