Samantha Emert and
Emily Duerr led the Bearcats to a doubleheader sweep over Waynesburg, 2-0 and 2-1 in Latrobe.
In game one, Emert tossed a one-hitter, while
Shelby Noel and
Kelsey Lineberger drove in runs to lift SVC to the victory.
In game two, Duerr scattered 4 hits, and the offense came back from a 1-0 deficit with a run in the 6th to tie, then scored the game winner in the 7th on a sacrifice fly by Noel.
Game one started as a pitchers' duel between Emert and Waynesburg's Stephanie Kotmoski, with the game remaining scoreless until the bottom of the 6th.
Sarah Swettlen singled to lead off the inning, then moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by
Courtney Patterson.
Shelby Noel then provided what would prove to be the game-winning hit, a single to right that brought home Swettlen. After
Emily Duerr singled, Lineberger then singled home Noel with an insurance run.
Emert worked a 1-2-3 seventh inning to seal the victory and improve her record to 10-2 on the season in the circle.
The Jackets got on the board in the third inning of game two, when Cameron Grimes led off with a ground rule double to left. Theresa Soknich singled her home to make it 1-0.
Waynesburg starter Lyndi Gareis had a shutout going until the bottom of the 6th, when Duerr singled to center to lead off. After a sacrifice bunt by Lineberger moved Duerr to second, a groundout by
Breanne Wallace moved the tying run to third. Emert then responded with a single that tied the game, 1-1.
After Duerr shut down the visitors in the top of the 7th,
Laken Lyon led off the bottom of the inning with a pinch-hit single. Pinch-runner
Suzie Cool then moved to second when
Sarah Swettlen laid down a bunt in front of the plate that turned into an infield single. Patterson then sacrifice bunted both runners ahead, bringing up Noel. For the second straight game, Noel drove home the game-winner, this time with a fly ball to left that brought home Cool.
With the sweep, SVC pulls into a three-way tie for first place in the Presidents' Athletic Conference at 10-4, while Waynesburg falls to 3-11. Saint Vincent is now 22-6 overall.
