SVC drops regular season finale at Mount St. Joseph

BOX SCORE

CINCINNATI, Ohio (April 19) - Mount St. Joseph rallied from a four goal second half deficit to defeat the Saint Vincent women's lacrosse team 13-12 in Ohio River Women's Lacrosse action.

The loss prevented the Bearcats from completing the ORLC regular season schedule undefeated. SVC finishes the regular season with an 11-7 overall record and an 8-1 mark in ORLC play. MSJ finished its season at 8-7 overall and 6-3 in conference action.

Freshman Maggie Nelson provided the first two goals of the afternoon for the Bearcats, who trailed MSJ 4-2 with just over 11 minutes to play in the first half.

However, that is when SVC found its offensive groove, scoring the next five goals to build a 7-4 advantage with 6:21 to play in the half. All five goals were scored by five different Bearcats during the scoring run. Jess Heuler, Sarah Wallerstedt, Helena Shoplik, Hannah Carroll and Molly Snyder all found the back of the net during the run.

The host Lions battled back for two goals before Shoplik tallied the final score of the first half, giving SVC an 8-6 advantage after 30 minutes of play.

MSJ continued the momentum early in the second half, tying the match at 8-8 with a pair of goals. Shoplik helped SVC regain the lead less than 30 seconds later as she scored an unassisted goal with 24:43 to play.

Senior Natalie Ambrozic, Snyder and Wallerstedt all followed with goals to give SVC a 12-8 edge with 22:07 to play. At that point, it appeared as if the Bearcats were in control. However, the Lions would rally with the final five goals of the contest, including the game-winner with just 30 seconds left.

Shoplik led the Bearcats with a team-best three goals, while Snyder chipped in two scores and three assists in the loss. Freshman Alex Piampiano started and played all 60 minutes in net, making seven saves.

Saint Vincent returns to action when they host Transylvania University at 1 p.m. on Friday, April 24 in the ORLC Tournament Semifinals. Second-seeded Thiel faces third-seeded W&J in the other semifinal contest at 4 p.m. All ORLC Tournament contests will be played at Chuck Noll Field.
