PHOTO GALLERYBETHANY, W.Va. (April 21) - The Saint Vincent softball team suffered a road sweep at Bethany in Presidents' Athletic Conference play. SVC dropped game one 2-0 before falling in game two 11-7.
The losses dropped SVC to 22-8 overall and 10-6 in PAC play. Meanwhile, Bethany improved to 18-14 overall and 9-5 in conference games.
In game one, the host Bison scored single runs on RBI groundouts in the third and fifth innings. Sophomore pitcher
Samantha Emert took the loss despite pitching a two-hitter.
SVC was led offensively by
Shelby Noel and
Emily Duerr, who each recorded two hits in the loss. The Bearcats had several opportunities to break through offensively but left seven runners on base.
Bethany used a five run third inning to open game two with a 5-0 lead. However, Saint Vincent battled back with a five spot of their own in the next half inning.
Breanne Wallace and Emert started the rally with back to back singles, before catcher
Jenna LoVasco walked to load the bases with no outs. After a strikeout, junior
Sarah Swettlen hit an opposite field grand slam to clear the bases and bring the Bearcats back within one run, at 5-4.
The rally didn't stop there, as
Courtney Patterson followed with a walk and Noel added a single up the middle. After a passed ball, SVC scored the tying run when Duerr reached on an error. SVC had a chance to take the lead but Wallace lined into a double play to end the threat.
After both teams were retired in their next at bat, Bethany regained control in the sixth inning with six runs to take an 11-5 advantage. Four of the five runs were unearned as a Bearcat defensive miscue started the big inning for Bethany.
SVC would tack on single runs in the sixth and seventh innings. Swettlen smacked her second home run of the day, a solo shot, in the sixth to close the gap to 11-6. Swettlen then doubled in Emert in the seventh to close out the scoring.
Swettlen was a bright spot in game two, going 3 for 4 with two home runs and six RBIs in the loss. Emert took the loss in relief, dropping her season record to 10-4.
The Bearcats wrap up the regular season when they face Thomas More for Senior Day on Saturday, April 25. Start time is slated for 1 p.m.
